Experts analyze records made in the forest for a certain period of time and determine which species of birds are present on them. Google has simplified this process with its new neural network.

The first attempts of neural networks to analyze sounds faced a number of difficulties. At the time of morning birdsong, when they are most active, trills of many species can often be heard at the same time. In this case, the accuracy of the algorithm is significantly reduced. The sounds of wind, thunderstorms, rain and even insects further complicate the work of artificial intelligence.

Google managed to solve these problems by applying the uncontrolled sound separation (MixIT) algorithm. It allows you to split one audio file into several isolated parts. Each of them contains the singing of one bird, which helps the neural network to further clearly determine its type. To improve the recognition process, random low-pass filtering was applied. This helps to catch the voices of birds at a considerable distance.

The first tests of the new neural network showed high efficiency in identifying specific bird species. This algorithm will help environmentalists investigate changes in biodiversity in forest areas after fires, as well as take a fresh look at what is happening to coral reefs.
