What was the first highway like?

The paths laid by animals through forests and jungles, obviously, were the prototype of human roads. They were easier and safer to use than laying new ones among the thickets. The earliest roads purposefully built by man were trails leading to nearby streams, streams, or hunting grounds.

When man began to develop trade, roads became more important. Great trade routes sprang up across Europe and Asia to transport goods such as tobacco, silk, and precious stones. These were roads well trampled down from constant use.

Probably the very first stone-paved roads were built in Egypt around 3000 BC. when the great pyramids were erected. To transport huge blocks of stone for the construction of the pyramids, they built a smooth road of hewn stone 18 meters wide and 805 meters long. On the island of Crete around 1500 BC. e. short paved roads were built. It is believed that the Carthaginians created a network of paved roads by the beginning of 500 BC. e.

The Romans were great road builders in ancient times. Roman carts and wagons had fixed axles and could not turn. For this reason, Roman roads were stretched out in as straight lines as possible. In 600 years, the Romans built over 70 miles of paved roads that stretched across the empire.

The first and most famous paved road, the Appian Way (between Rome and Capua), began to be built in 312 BC. e. In America, some Indian peoples have reached a high degree of civilization. About a millennium ago, the Inca tribes in Peru built a paved road some 4000 meters long from Ecuador to central Chile. The roads of the Yucatán, built by the Maya, were straight, solidly made of stone and covered with cement mortar, which gave them a smart white look.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Flying wing for photography of Mars 18.07.2015

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is designing the Prandtl-m aircraft, which in the future will take detailed bird's-eye photography of the surface of Mars.

Prandtl-m (short for Preliminary Research Aerodynamic Design to Land on Mars) will be a flying wing. The current composite-constructed prototype is about 60 cm wide and weighs 1,8 kg.

Flight testing of the Prandtl-m will begin later this year. To do this, the device in a balloon will be delivered to a height of 30 meters above the Earth's surface, where conditions are similar to those observed in the Martian atmosphere. According to the test results, the necessary changes will be made to the wing design.

In the final version, the Prandtl-m is planned to be equipped with a topographic aerial camera and a high-altitude radiometer.

NASA expects to deliver a drone to the Red Planet in 2022-2024. along with the new rover. It is assumed that the wing will be dropped during the landing of the rover at an altitude of about 600 meters. In 10 minutes of flight, Prandtl-m will be able to cover a distance of up to 32 km. The resulting high-resolution images will then be studied to determine the most suitable landing site for astronauts who can be sent to Mars as part of the colonization program.
