Radiation indicator in the radio receiver

Section Dosimeters. A transistor receiver with a radiation detector introduced into it not only acquires a new important function, but the combination of these two devices has obvious benefits: the housing, power source, low-frequency amplifier and acoustic emitter can be common in such a combine ... >>

Starting the computer with the remote control

Section Infrared technology. Turning off the computer with the remote control of the TV tuner is not difficult. This is one feature of all TV tuners without exception. But turning on the computer by pressing the same cherished key, alas, will not work. To solve the problem, you have to pick up a soldering iron. So, we need to modify the IR receiver included with any tuner. This sensor contains three contacts. Depending on the specific model, the location of the contacts may vary. But this is not important, since the same thing is transmitted through these contacts. Supply voltage (+5 V and GND) is supplied to two contacts. The third contact is signal. We need to connect to all three contacts, for this we remove the insulation and solder three wires, simultaneously determining the purpose of the contacts using a multimeter ... >>

Another life of the LPT port. Part 2

Section Electronics and computer. To record signals to the LPT port, I recommend assembling a circuit (Fig. 1) consisting of eight switches and eight resistors with a resistance of 270 Ohms - 1 kOhm. With this position of the switches (buttons) SW1-SW8, a logical 1 is present on all upper contacts; when any one is closed, a logical 0 will appear on the corresponding contact. The contacts can be connected directly to the D0-D7 bus (pins 2-9, address &H378) or to ERROR , SELECT, PAPER END, ACK and –BUSY (pins 15, 13, 12, 10 and 11, address &H379) ... >>

Sound-absorbing silk 17.05.2024

In a world where noise is becoming increasingly intrusive, the emergence of innovative materials that can reduce its impact is of great interest. MIT researchers have unveiled a new sound-absorbing silk fabric that promises to revolutionize quiet spaces. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has made significant breakthroughs in the field of sound absorption. Researchers have developed a special silk fabric that can effectively absorb sound and create cozy, quiet environments. The fabric, thinner than a human hair, contains a unique vibrating fiber that is activated when voltage is applied to it. This feature allows the fabric to be used to suppress sound waves in two different ways. The first method uses fabric vibrations to generate sound waves that cover and cancel out unwanted noise, similar to noise-canceling headphones. This p ... >>

High Energy Density Capacitor 17.05.2024

Energy plays a key role in many aspects of modern life, and the ever-increasing demand for efficient and fast-charging power sources is driving innovation. Researchers at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis have taken a significant step forward with a high-energy-density capacitor that promises to revolutionize the world of energy. A team of scientists from the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis presented the results of their latest research on heterogeneous thin-film structures for capacitors. Researchers, working with ferroelectrics, inadvertently created a capacitor with an amazing energy density that is 19 times higher than that of conventional elements. This breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of fast-charging batteries, which are so necessary in the modern world. Capacitors play a key role in various devices, providing stable ... >>

Causes of conflicts between brothers and sisters 16.05.2024

Family relationships are often complex and multi-layered, and conflicts between siblings are no exception. Research in this area can help us understand what factors underlie these conflicts and why they occur so frequently. Let's look at some of the findings from psychologists at Arizona State University. American psychologists from Arizona State University conducted a study aimed at identifying the causes of conflicts between brothers and sisters. They found that different forms of violence, whether physical or verbal, did not depend on the gender of the siblings. This means that both girls and boys can exhibit aggressive behavior towards their loved ones. Other studies have shown that conflict between siblings often persists into adulthood, even as contact decreases. This indicates that people often follow established patterns of behavior formed in childhood. It was also found that, despite ... >>

A new property of light has been discovered 02.07.2019

Scientists from Spain and the USA have discovered a new property of light that was not even predicted before. They received a beam of light with a time-varying rotation. The new property is called intrinsic torque.

The fact that light can twist was discovered in 1995. In this case, the light wave is similar to a corkscrew, twisted around the direction of propagation. Such a light beam is also called a vortex. Physicists say it has orbital angular momentum. This property of light has found applications in optical communications, microscopy, quantum optics, and the manipulation of microparticles. However, all the vortex rays received up to this point were static, that is, did not change in time.

The authors of this work obtained a light beam with a turn that changes with time. They compared it to a whirlpool that speeds up the rotation. Most importantly, the change in rotation was not due to any effect on the light. He changed the speed of rotation himself, without outside help.

In the experiment, the researchers passed overlapping pulses of swirling light from two ultraviolet lasers through a cloud of argon gas. As a result of the interaction, a combined vortex beam was obtained at the exit from the cloud. It turned out that if the pulses have different orbital momentum and a small delay relative to each other, then the output beam has a time-varying rotation, which can be controlled by changing the delay time. The intensity of this beam in cross section has the shape of a crescent.

At high values of the orbital momentum of the incident pulses, the time of change in the orbital momentum of the resulting beam is much less than the pulse length and has a femtosecond (10^-15 s) scale. In the future, such vortex beams can be used for ultrafast control of nanostructures and atoms. Perhaps they will open new directions for the use of light in optical communications and quantum optics.
