Japanese researchers and auto parts makers say the new wood-pulp material weighs only one-fifth that of steel and could be five times stronger than metal.

Cellulosic nanofibers are used in products ranging from inks to transparent displays, but their potential use in cars has been included in the "Kyoto Process," in which chemically treated wood fibers are kneaded into plastics. This method reduces the cost of production by about one-fifth of the cost of other processes.

It is the cheapest, high-performance cellulose nanofiber product, which is why we are focusing on it for use in automotive and aviation parts, said Kyoto University professor Hiroaki Yano.
