It is possible that some elephant lived for about a hundred years, but the recorded record is only a little over 60 years. The horse shares with the elephant the championship in longevity. Many cases are known when they live for more than 50 years. And here are other unquestioned facts of longevity: a hippopotamus - 41 years, a rhinoceros - 40, a bear - 34, monkeys - more than 20 years, cats - about 23, dogs - 22 years. These data refer to individual animals and have not been averaged. Among birds, parrots and eagles are sometimes said to live for over 100 years. But again, this has not been proven. And as far as proven facts are concerned, the longest-lived bird species that have ever existed are the condor - 52 years, the parrot - 54, the eagle - 55, the white pelican - 51. Among the small birds: the starling - 17 years, the canary - 22, English sparrow - 23, cardinal - 30. There are a lot of legends about different fish. Carp are considered to be long-lived, but the oldest carp is known to have lived only to 25 years. European catfish, according to reliable data, lived for more than 60 years in an English lake. But the American eel, as it became known, has reached the age of 50. And finally, it's time to say who the longevity champion is. This is a turtle. One tortoise, known as the "Moorish tortoise", lived to be 152 years old and some biologists suggest it may live to be 200 years old. And one more indisputable fact. The "royal tortoise" native to the United States can live up to 123 years!
