Electrical wires made of plastic

06.05.2012

Researchers from the Sadron Institute and the University of Strasbourg have created plastic fibers of a few nanometers that are excellent current conductors. The invention can be used in the electronics industry, and, unlike carbon nanotubes, the new nanowires self-assemble under a flash of light and are easy to manufacture. Inexpensive and easy to handle, plastic nanowires combine the advantages of two main materials of the electronics industry: they conduct electricity like metals and organic polymers. Moreover, their electrical properties are similar to those of metals.

In addition, plastic nanowires are lightweight and flexible, opening up opportunities for miniaturization of electronic components down to the nanometer scale.

To create the nanowires, the scientists used chemically modified triarylamine molecules, synthetic molecules that have been used by Xerox for decades in the Xerox photocopying process. To their surprise, the scientists found that the new triarylamine molecules, when exposed to light, spontaneously form fibers several hundred nanometers (1 nm is one billionth of a meter), creating so-called supramolecular structures consisting of several thousand molecules.

The researchers carefully studied the electrical properties of the new nanofibers. First of all, it became clear that nanofibers are formed in the light only between two electrodes. The second unexpected phenomenon was the extremely high electrical conductivity of plastic nanowires. They were able to transmit an extremely high current density: over 2.10^6 amperes per square centimeter, i.e. almost at the level of a copper wire. In addition, nanowires have very low contact resistance when bonded to metals: 10000 times lower than the best organic polymers.

Currently, scientists are going to integrate new fibers into various electronic devices: flexible screens, solar panels, etc.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Acer SpatialLabs View Pro 3 27D monitor 17.10.2023

Acer has introduced a new 3D monitor in the SpatialLabs View Pro 27 series. It stands out for its impressive size and innovative spatial audio technology without the need for headphones.

This 27-inch monitor features a 4K VA panel with a 160Hz refresh rate, up to 400 nits of brightness, and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. It supports AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync technologies. A variety of connectivity ports include HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, USB-C and two USB-A.

The screen has an anti-glare coating designed to protect your eyes. The removable visor improves image quality even in bright light.

An important element of the new product is an infrared camera with eye tracking function. Thanks to this technology, 3D images can be viewed without the use of special glasses. The lens can be easily switched, turning the SpatialLabs View Pro 27 into a regular monitor.

A unique feature is 3D spatial sound, which is provided by two 2,5 W speakers. They extend well beyond the bottom bezel of the monitor and, according to Acer, are capable of tracking head movements, powered by artificial intelligence. Support for directional transmission of audio signals is also provided. These innovations create spatial sound without the need for headphones.

Acer plans to release SpatialLabs View Pro 27 in the first quarter of 2024.
