How do coconuts grow?

As everyone probably knows, coconuts, or simply coconuts, grow on palm trees. Outside, they are covered with a hard shell, protecting the pulp from damage: when the coconut ripens, it has to fall from a considerable height! Coconuts reach a diameter of 8 to 20 centimeters. Directly under the hard peel is a not very thick layer of dense white pulp, and the void in the center is filled with a watery, pleasant-tasting liquid - coconut milk.

If you have ever seen a coconut close up, then you probably noticed that it has three "eyes" on the outer shell. These "eyes" are undeveloped buds. When a coconut is planted in the soil, one of them blossoms and sprouts, which eventually turns into a new palm tree.

However, before this palm tree begins to bear fruit, at least eight years must pass. A mature coconut tree blooms all year round and almost always has a few ripe nuts on it. However, the ripening of the walnut is a long process, depending on the place of growth and variety, it takes from several months to a year or even more. On one tree, an average of 50 nuts grow every year.

The height of various types of coconut palms ranges from 6 to 20 meters. There are no branches on their smooth trunks, and only the tops of the trees are decorated with bunches of dense, fleecy leaves 3-6 meters long. Coconut palms can grow at low elevations (up to 900 meters above sea level), but they are usually planted in lower places.

One of the features of these trees is that they willingly live in close proximity to sea water, although they do not need it at all. This is due to the ease with which the shallow roots of palm trees absorb moisture from the abundantly irrigated soil on the coast. Coconut skin is not damaged in salt water. This means that a nut that has fallen into the sea waves can be carried out to the open sea and, after long wanderings, thrown onto some distant shore, where after a while a young palm tree will appear.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where did ice cream come from?

Fifty years ago, people only ate ice cream in the summer. Now it is eaten all year round. It was invented in the East long before schoolchildren first tried ice cream in waffle cups.

Explorer Marco Polo saw people eating ice cream there. He liked this idea so much that he brought it to Italy. From there, ice cream came to France and became popular with noble people. They tried to hide the ice cream recipe from the common people. But, of course, people soon recognized the taste of this delicacy, and ice cream became popular among them. It soon spread throughout the world and even reached the United States.

The first ice cream factory began operating in Baltimore, Maryland in 1851. But the production of ice cream did not become widespread until the beginning of our century, when new refrigeration units appeared.

Ice cream consists of cream, milk or dairy products, and sometimes eggs are added to it. For taste, vanilla, chocolate, berries, nuts or fruits are added to ice cream. The recipe for regular ice cream is as follows: for 80-85% of cream or other dairy products, take 15% sugar, from 0,5 to 4,5% flavor and 0,3% stabilizer.

A small amount of stabilizer is added to make the ice cream more uniform and prevent the formation of coarse ice crystals. For this purpose, edible gelatin is usually used.

When you eat a third of a cup of vanilla ice cream, you get as much calcium, protein, and vitamin B as in half a cup of milk, and as much vitamin A as in a whole cup.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Ophthalmology printer 28.01.2013

If the printer is rarely used, the ink may dry in the print head hole. In this case, the printer driver, as a rule, has a flushing function: pressurized ink is fed into the nozzle and dissolves the cork. But in severe cases, you have to inject a special solvent into the print head with a syringe.

Engineers from the University of Missouri (USA) suggest using the experience of nature: a similar problem is facing the human eye. Tears are constantly supplied to the surface of the cornea so that the cornea does not dry out. Tears dry up, and a film of proteins and salts that make up the tear fluid could form on the cornea. But this does not happen, because with periodic blinking, the eyelid lubricates the surface of the cornea with a fatty lubricant protruding from special glands on the inside of the eyelid. Covering the film of tears with a thin layer of fat, this lubricant slows down the evaporation and drying of tears.

In the print head of the new system, the nozzle openings, when the printer is not in operation, are covered with a microscopic drop of silicone oil, which does not allow the ink to evaporate. When a signal is given to print, the oil droplet is shifted to the side by an electrostatic field, and when the printer is turned off, it returns to its place.
