Whom Jupiter wants to destroy, he deprives him of reason

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Whom Jupiter wants to destroy, that deprives the mind.

Meaning: Quoted as a reminder that a person punishes himself most severely when he commits unreasonable acts, persists in his mistakes and delusions, etc.

Origin: From Latin: Quos Iupiter perdere vult, dementat. The words of an unknown ancient Greek tragic playwright of the era of Sophocles (c. 496 - c. 406 BC), which are often found in the form of a quote from ancient authors: "When a deity prepares a misfortune for a person, he first of all takes away from him the argues." The same thought (as a quote) is present in the speech of the Athenian statesman and orator Lycurgus (390-324 BC), which he uttered against Leocrates: gives a wrong direction to his thoughts so that he does not recognize his mistakes. The Latin formula of this thought that has become winged: Deus quos vult perdere dementat prius [deus quos vult perdere dementat prius] - "Whoever God wants to punish, he first deprives of reason" belongs to the English philologist Joshua Barnes. He used this phrase in his commentary on one of the texts attributed to the ancient Greek poet, playwright Euripides (480-406 BC). Varne published his collected works (with his comments) (1694) in Cambridge (England). The modern, most common version of this winged expression - Whom Jupiter wants to destroy, first deprives of reason - is given in the comments of the French philologist Boissonade to the works of Euripides, published (1825) in Paris. The most ancient Russian version (apparently based on Greek sources) of this winged expression is an entry in the Ipatiev Chronicle: "God, when he wants to show off a person, takes away his mind."

Random phraseology:

And it's all about him.

Meaning:

About the collection of information (books, articles, etc.) about someone, something (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

The title of the novel (1974) by the Soviet writer Vil Vladimirovich Lipatov (1927-1979).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. A mosquito bite begins to be felt only after the bloodsucker injects poisonous saliva into the injection site, but the injection itself is painless. Taking the structure of a mosquito proboscis as a model, employees of Kansai University in Osaka (Japan) created a needle for a syringe, the injection of which is not felt.
