How do mushrooms grow?

Mushrooms are wonderful plants. They have no roots, stems, leaves. They grow so fast that you think they are growing before your eyes. They belong to the fungal family, so they don't have the chlorophyll to make food for themselves. Some of them are delicacies, while others are so poisonous that to eat them means certain death.

The part of the mushroom that rises above the ground is the edible part. The rest of the plant lies underground as a mass of white intertwined threads. These threads are called mycelium, or mycelium. Mycelial filaments grow out of spores, and spores are tiny, dusty particles that fall from the cap of a fully mature mushroom. Whitish buds appear on these threads in the form of cones, they begin to grow, develop, and eventually they open in the form of an umbrella or other form characteristic of the fungus.

Most mushrooms have small round holes at the bottom of the cap, very close to each other. It is in these holes that spores develop. When ripe, the spores fall out and are carried by the wind. When the spores land on favorable soil, they develop into new fungi. Most mushrooms grow in moist shady forests or in gorges, where there is always a lot of shade, warmth and moisture.

There are mushrooms that, unlike these, grow in open areas, in the sun. But since mushrooms are made up mostly of water, most of them cannot live in dry, hot winds or in the hot summer sun.

Can a person be born without fingerprints?

A rare mutation in the SMARCAD1 gene can lead to adermatoglyphia, a genetic disorder characterized by the absence of fingerprints. Recently, a woman from Switzerland with this feature was unable to clear customs and enter the United States. Currently, only 4 families have been documented worldwide with adermatoglyphia.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Bird singing changes due to the noise of cars 30.04.2017

Dr. Katherine Gentry of George Mason University, USA, and her colleagues investigated the effect of traffic noise on birdsong. It turned out that because of the noise, the birds sing differently - the songs become shorter and sound in a lower frequency range. This can affect their ability to attract mates and defend their territory. The scientists presented their results in an article published in the journal Bioacoustics.

The researchers focused their attention on the singing of the Eastern beer (Contopus virens) in three parks in the Washington suburbs. The songs were recorded in sections where traffic noise from the nearest road was either relatively constant or decreased weekly during the 36-hour road closure.

Bandwidth, duration and maximum and minimum frequencies of birdsong were measured and analyzed, as well as the amplitude of low-frequency traffic noise for 20 seconds of each song and the full range of background noise levels.

It turned out that the birds instantly reacted to fluctuations in traffic noise, changing the length and frequency of their songs in order to improve transmission. When the roads were closed, the songs returned to their natural characteristics - with wider bandwidth, lower minimum frequencies, and longer duration.

While the above changes help other birds hear songs better in the face of increased traffic noise, birds listening to these altered calls may not respond as strongly to them, which reduces the ability of males - who tune their songs to attract a mate and defend territory. If noise levels are periodically reduced, such as by closing a road, the birds will be able to perform a version of their song that optimizes vocal performance, attraction to females, and territory defense.

While reducing noise altogether would be ideal, temporary road closures are also beneficial and could be part of an effective environmental conservation strategy, the authors wrote. This could help reverse the decline in the Eastern beer population, which is reported to have halved in the Washington area in the past seventy years, and may also have a beneficial effect on other species that can correct their signals "in real time."
