What kind of pornographic scene is in Woe of Wit?

In the 19th century, actresses refused to play Sophia in "Woe from Wit" with the words: "I am a decent woman and do not play in pornographic scenes!". They considered such a scene a night conversation with Molchalin, who was not yet the husband of the heroine.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What drug was originally marketed as a cough medicine for children?

Many well-known drugs were originally promoted as medicines. For example, heroin was introduced to the market in 1898 by the German company Bayer AG as a cough medicine for children. Although after 15 years its production in this status was stopped, even before 1971 heroin could be bought in German pharmacies. The medical history of cocaine is even richer: numerous experiments in the second half of the 19th century gave rise to scientists recommending it for anesthesia and increasing endurance. Sigmund Freud, after testing the properties of cocaine on himself, promoted it as a cure for depression, sexual disorders, syphilis, and alcoholism. Freud claimed that cocaine was not addictive, but this was subsequently refuted, and cocaine was gradually banned in all countries.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Innovative water purification system 09.10.2015

Six years ago, the American company MSR announced that it had succeeded in developing a device for purifying water in the field, and specifically for the US military. According to the authors, the device was able to destroy not only bacteria and parasites such as cryptosporidium, which cause diseases of the digestive system, but also viruses, that is, it was a device for simultaneously filtering and purifying water. Moreover, all this was done without the use of chemicals, batteries, ultraviolet radiation, and even a highly reactive carbon mixture.

This year, MSR announced the release of a civilian version called the Guardian Water Purifier. This "Guardsman", according to the company, cleans "white" not only water, but also itself after use.

The cleaning technology is based on some "special fibers", intertwined in such a way that even the smallest microbiological elements do not penetrate through them. At the same time, the hollow structure of the fibers is not damaged by freezing, and the Guardian itself is able to withstand a fall from a height of two meters onto a concrete floor or a pressure of 1335 N.

The self-cleaning system is a separate water pumping line with a filter, through which about 10% of the water passing through the device enters. Due to its original military purpose, the Guardsman meets US military standards and is able to purify over 10 liters of water during its life cycle.
