How do we fall asleep? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How do we fall asleep? We know quite well what happens during sleep. Our body is inactive, consciousness turns off, and we do not react to the events taking place around us. We are also quite aware of what happens in our bodies during sleep. We know how muscles relax, how certain vital organs continue to function, what happens to blood circulation, body temperature, and much more. But how does the desire to sleep appear? There are many theories about this and it is impossible to check which one is the most correct. For example, it used to be believed that we fall asleep when the blood in our body drains or rushes to a vital organ. This theory has now been abandoned, because we know that such changes do not occur. Another theory, which also turned out to be erroneous, claimed that the circuit of nerve cells in our body, which act as conductors in the nervous system, is destroyed, and after that we fall asleep. The assumption that we fall asleep as a result of the cessation of the supply of impulses from the body to the brain turned out to be erroneous. It has even been argued that sleep is the result of a certain instinct, it is a positive process, as a result of which our body voluntarily falls into sleep. There is also a whole group of chemical theories regarding sleep. Their essence boils down to the fact that a certain substance required for the body to stay in a state of wakefulness is depleted, and we fall into sleep, and during sleep this substance is replenished. According to another theory, a certain toxic substance accumulates during wakefulness and induces sleep. Thus, the mystery of one of the simplest and at the same time important phenomena in which we participate has not been solved. Every night we close our eyes and move into another world - the world of sleep. When we wake up, it seems that we are returning from a journey, but we do not know what really happened to us.
