How did the Salvation Army come about?

There are very few countries in the world today where they know nothing about the Salvation Army and its activities, and the idea of creating this great organization arose in the mind of one person. That man was William Booth. In 1865 he was a young Methodist preacher walking the darkest streets of the East End in London. There he prayed for the men and women who gathered around him, although they used to play tricks on him and even throw stones at him. But Booth did not despair.

Day after day he took to the streets with his wife and a few followers. Day after day, this small group invited people to come to meetings held in a tent, a dance hall, or an old warehouse. During these meetings, they tried to bring religion to the poor and do everything they could to relieve their suffering. At first the group called itself the Christian Mission, but in 1878 they organized themselves into the Salvation Army. The organization adopted the military system. Its founder, William Booth, was called a general, and his workers wore uniforms.

The organization has grown at an astonishing rate. The army was divided into territories, which made up divisions, which in turn consisted of corps and outposts (missionary stations). The general and officers directed from the international headquarters in London all the activities of the Army.

The Salvation Army has established about 18 posts around the world. Through these posts, she conducts her social work. Its service includes hotels with inexpensive kitchens and rooms, factories, agricultural colonies, orphanages, day nurseries, insurance companies. The Salvation Army was organized in the United States by George Scott Railton in 1880. Raising organic pigs 20.03.2013

A research team from the University of Guelph (Canada) has developed a new line of transgenic pigs. The new line of animals is called Cassie and reliably transmits genes that change the enzyme composition of saliva. Thanks to this, pigs were able to absorb phosphorus in an amount "not provided" by nature.

Phosphorus is critical for the healthy growth of pigs. Unfortunately, 50 to 70% of the phosphorus in feed crops is in the form of phytic acid, which pigs cannot digest. In this regard, many farmers use the enzyme phytase as an additive to feed. This enzyme breaks down phytic acid, helping animals absorb more nutrients and therefore gain weight faster. However, phytase is expensive and must be handled with care, otherwise the enzyme is destroyed and does not provide any beneficial effect.

A new breed of transgenic pigs Cassie synthesizes phytase directly in their salivary glands. This eliminates the need for additives and enzymes. Moreover, pigs absorb phosphorus better, which means that their waste contains less of this substance that clogs the environment.

Thus, genetic engineering in agriculture has reached another important milestone. It was possible to overcome the natural limitations of a living organism, accelerate its growth and reduce collateral environmental damage. So far, Cassie pig meat has not hit the shelves, as more research is being done on its characteristics. However, scientists are confident that the new pork will be safe for humans. For sure, the Cassie line of animals will become widespread, and genetic engineers will continue to improve the animals.
