Who does not work shall not eat

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Who does not work shall not eat.

Meaning: The lazy one does not deserve a reward.

Origin: The idea that lazy and loafers should not be fed at the expense of those who work appears quite often in human history. For the first time, an expression with a similar meaning is found in the New Testament in the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians of the Apostle Paul: "If anyone does not want to work, then do not eat" (3:10).

Random phraseology:

If only the night were darker tonight!

Meaning:

Of the hope that circumstances will favor the conceived venture.

Origin:

From the Russian urban folk song "My Beauty Lives" (late 1860th century), which was based on the poem "The Tramp" by the poet S. F. Ryskin (1895-1883). The poem was published in his poetry collection "The First Step" (3): "I'll go in to my dear in the tower // And throw myself at her feet. // If only it were night // It'll be darker today!" The text of the well-known song is only the XNUMXrd part (slightly modified) of this poem, which talks about the hero's escape from prison to meet his beloved.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. Effect of water temperature on civil unrest 19.07.2012

Statisticians from Princeton University (USA) analyzed 234 episodes of civil unrest and unrest that took place from 1950 to 2004 in 175 countries of the world, and found that in 90 countries experiencing the influence of El Niño, the likelihood of conflicts during the years of this oceanic phenomenon was twice as high as in countries far from the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean.

El Niño is an intermittent warming of the upper layers of water off the coast of Peru, lasting more than a year. It affects the climate mainly in South America, where floods or droughts can occur during El Niño years. The weather affects mainly those countries where the entire economy is tied to agriculture and unrest can arise in case of crop failure. In the twentieth century, especially powerful El Niño events occurred in 1925-1926, 1982-1983 and 1997-1998.
