When was the mechanical differential invented?

When the car turns, to reduce wheel wear, the wheel traveling on the inner radius needs to rotate more slowly. In order for the wheels on the same axle to rotate at different angular speeds, a mechanical device is used - a differential. Despite its complexity, such a device was known to the ancient Chinese long before our era. They knew a device called "South Pointing Chariot" - a small model of a chariot with a man pointer. This pointer was connected by a differential transmission to the wheels and kept the direction given to it, regardless of the direction of movement.

Who and where conducted partisan activity until 1974, not knowing about the end of the Second World War?

In 1944, junior lieutenant of the Japanese army Onoda Hiroo was ordered to lead a partisan detachment on the Philippine island of Lubang. Having lost his soldiers in battle, Onoda managed to survive and fled into the jungle. In 1974, he was found on the same island where he had until now carried out guerrilla activities, killing about 30 Filipinos. Not believing in the end of the war, the lieutenant refused to lay down his arms. And only when the direct commander of Onoda arrived on the island and ordered to surrender, he left the jungle, recognizing the defeat of Japan.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Oldest fossil embryo discovered 02.12.2019

Scientists from China and the UK have discovered the fossilized remains of a previously unknown multicellular organism that developed as an embryo. The age of the find is estimated at 609 million years.

Several hundred fossilized "embryos" of organisms of the same species have been found in Guizhou province in southern China. The unknown organism was named Caveasphaera. It is very similar to the embryos of some starfish and corals, the authors note. But whether he was an animal, it is impossible to say for sure.

The main feature of the find is that the discovered "representatives" of the Caveasphaera species were at different stages of development: some consisted of a pair of cells, others were already of a more complex structure. This development is very similar to the development of modern embryos.

"Our results show that Caveasphaera 'sorts' their cells during embryonic development in the same way that animals and humans do, but we have no evidence that these embryos evolved into more complex organisms," said one of the authors of the study. , Zongjun Yin of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The fossils found suggest that, scientists believe, embryonic development developed long before the appearance of ancient animals.
