What is the size of the universe?

It is simply impossible for a person to imagine the actual size of the universe. Not only do we not know how big it is, but it is even difficult for us to imagine how far it can stretch.

If we start to move away from the Earth, we will understand why this is so. Earth is a small part of the solar system. The solar system includes the sun, planets that revolve around the sun, asteroids, which are small planets, and meteors.

Our entire solar system, in turn, is a small part of another large system called a "galaxy". The galaxy consists of millions and millions of stars, many of which are much larger than our Sun and have their own solar systems.

So, all the stars that we observe in our galaxy, which we call the "Milky Way", are "suns". The distance between them is measured in light years, not kilometers. In one year, a beam of light travels over 11 km. Alpha Centauri - the closest and brightest star - is located at a distance of more than 000 km from us.

But let's imagine the size of our galaxy. It is believed that its diameter reaches 100 light years. This means 000 times 100 km. But our galaxy, in turn, is a small part of another, larger system.

There are probably millions more galaxies outside the Milky Way. But perhaps all of them together form an even more significant system.

That is why it is difficult for us to imagine the size of the universe. By the way, scientists believe that the universe is expanding. This means that the distance between two galaxies doubles in a few billion years.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

In which city is the arrival of spring declared by a special decree, depending on the blooming of the chestnut tree?

In Geneva, for 2 centuries, there has been a tradition to declare the onset of spring by a special decree when the first leaf is blooming on the "official chestnut tree" growing under the windows of the cantonal government building. According to statistics, most often spring was announced in March, although often earlier, and in 2002 the chestnut tree completely blossomed on December 29th. The most paradoxical year was 2006: first spring was announced in March, and then again in October, as the tree unexpectedly bloomed again.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Floating robot to explore a volcano after an eruption 28.08.2022

The robot drone Maxlimer went to the Pacific Ocean to depict the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai volcano on the map after a powerful eruption.

The floating apparatus was developed by the British company Sea-Kit International. The data obtained speaks of the prolongation of volcanic activity in the region.

The 12-meter unmanned boat is equipped with a winch that allows you to lower the mapping equipment under water to a depth of 300 meters. 10 cameras in real time transmit images to screens at the headquarters of Sea-Kit International in the British village of Tollesbury, located in Essex in the south-east of England.

Operators operate the Maxlimer around the clock and in shifts via satellite, located at a distance of about 16 thousand km, and monitor the transmission of the necessary data from the Pacific Ocean.

Unmanned technology ensures that no human beings are harmed while surveying an active volcano.
