Did you know?

How many states are there in the USA?

Formally - forty-six.

Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are all officially Commonwealths.

The status does not give them any special constitutional powers. They simply chose that word for themselves at the end of the War of Independence (1775-1783), making it clear that they were no longer colonies answerable to the English crown, but were becoming states governed "by the common consent of the people."

Virginia (named after the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I (Virgin - virgin, virgin (English).)) was one of the first thirteen American states (hence the thirteen red stripes on the US state flag) and was the first to proclaim itself the Commonwealth in 1776.

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts were not long in coming, and Kentucky, originally a county within Virginia, declared itself a Commonwealth in 1792.

Interestingly, there are two more Commonwealths similar to the American ones outside the borders of the United States. In July 1952, the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico adopted its own constitution, declaring itself the Commonwealth of the United States. The same thing was done in 1975 by the Northern Mariana Islands, a state in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. Neither of these two states is part of the United States.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which movie helped you make the right decisions to save the crew of Apollo 13?

Based on the 1969 film Lost, NASA develops an emergency plan to rescue three astronauts trapped in orbit with a limited supply of oxygen. When the picture was released, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 had already visited the Moon, and a few months later Apollo 13 flew, on board of which there were also three crew members and an accident also occurred. Ground support engineer Jerry Woodfil had watched The Lost just a couple of hours before and later recalled that the events of the film directly influenced the flow of reasoning and helped to make the right decisions. For example, as in the movies, the astronauts were given instructions to recharge their batteries from a spare set, which was an undocumented possibility.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Fast Nano Water Purification Filter 27.09.2018

Today, water pollution is considered one of the most serious problems worldwide. Some scientists estimate that almost one in nine people do not have sustainable access to clean water. Many families use tap water for drinking - from the tap, purified with a filter. The choice of filters is varied: some use either thin-film membranes or, for example, ion-substituting resins. In others, coconut shell activated carbon often acts as a filter element.

A new and more efficient filtration technology has been proposed by researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The role of the filter itself is played by nanostructures, or clusters, which are naturally formed during the melting of metals. The filter can remove both heavy metals and oils from the water very quickly.

The researchers created the alloy by combining gallium-based liquid metals with aluminum. When this alloy was exposed to water, microscopically thin sheets of alumina compounds naturally "grew" on its surface. These thin layers - 100 times thinner than a human hair - become porous on a rough surface, allowing water to quickly pass through them while aluminum oxide compounds absorb contaminants.

Experiments have shown that the stacked thin sheet nano-filter is effective in separating oil from water and in removing lead from water that was considered safe to drink.

Another plus of the new filtration method is that it leaves no waste. It requires only aluminum and water, and even for each new batch of nanostructures, the same liquid metals are reused.
