Of sound mind and solid memory

Russian empire
Russian empire

Phraseologism: In sound mind and solid memory.

Meaning: 1. About his own sanity, normal mental state: "Thank God, I am of sound mind and solid memory, so as not to do this ..." , but he did such a thing ... "(condemnation of an outwardly normal, but man who commits ridiculous acts).

Origin: The classic formula for the beginning of wills in Russian pre-revolutionary law, which fixes the state of the testator's full legal capacity at the time the document was drawn up. Article 1016 of the "Code of Civil Laws of the Russian Empire" stated the following on this score: "All spiritual wills, both serf and domestic, must be drawn up in sound mind and firm memory."

Random phraseology:

Eat to live, not live to eat.

Meaning:

About a sense of proportion, restraint, avoidance of gluttony.

Origin:

This aphorism, belonging to Socrates (469-399 BC), was often quoted by ancient writers (Quintilian, Aulus Gellius, Diogenes Laertius, etc.) and was conveyed by Plutarch in his work "How a young man should read poets." Molière introduced this saying into his comedy The Miser (1668). In the 5th scene of the 3rd act, Valery, in love with Harpagon's daughter, knowing his exorbitant stinginess and wanting to please him, tells the cook in his presence that it is impossible to feed the guests: "According to the ancient sage, one must eat to live, and not live to eat."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

XNUMXD images can be touched 26.07.2015

The Japanese company Burton Inc, together with scientists from Tokyo, Tsukuba, Utsunomiya and Nagoya Technical Universities, has developed a technology for demonstrating three-dimensional images of Fairy Lights, which forms an object from plasma droplets using a femtosecond laser directly in the air.

Burton Inc's previous development was the Aerial Burton Laser Projection Display, which displayed three-dimensional images and text in space.

Now the technology of creating volumetric pixels, or voxels, from ionized gas with ultrashort laser pulses has made it possible to make images tangible.

Plasma voxels are formed by ionizing the air at the focal point using many extremely short pulses of an infrared laser passing through a 3D scanner with a varifocal lens. In a microscopic drop of plasma, excess energy is released in the form of blue photons.

Volumetric pixels disappear fairly quickly, so the laser must fire several hundred thousand pulses per second to maintain a stable image. Until recently, it was impossible to touch such pictures, because the laser exposure led to a burn.

The new Fairy Lights system uses femtosecond lasers, whose pulse duration is so short that they do not have time to cause any damage to a person. The plasma becomes brighter when touched, and the laser-generated shock waves evoke a tactile sensation.

The plasma provides visual and tactile feedback, and the 3D images can serve as indicators or spatial controls. Burton Inc engineers believe their technology could lead to full-fledged XNUMXD touch displays.
