Platform-in-a-box technology for the ZigBee standard

Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled an implementation of a single-chip system development platform based on the ZigBee standard. This solution provides the lowest power consumption and highest performance in the industry. The MC1322x platform is designed to provide a battery life of up to 20 years and outperforms existing ZigBee solutions by a factor of two.

Freescale's MC1322x platform integrates individual components of a ZigBee system into a single package and reduces the number of external components and system cost using Platform in Package (PiP) technology. The MC1322x contains a 32-bit microcontroller (MC), a fully IEEE 802.15.4 compliant transceiver, balun, and RF matching elements. All this is housed in a small-sized LGA package and eliminates the need for external RF components.

This platform has a TurboLink mode designed to increase the data transfer rate between nodes up to 2 Mbps. Freescale's proprietary TurboLink mode boosts data speeds up to 2 Mbps. This mode provides an ideal basis for supporting applications such as voice communications, wireless headphones, compressed audio, and large data transfers.

The MC1322x can automatically switch between the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol and TurboLink technology packages, allowing the designer to take advantage of high-speed communications while controlling and monitoring the ZigBee network ring.
