How do the achievements of modern civilization harm man as a biological species?

Mutations are the driving force of evolution, because, being the cause of the emergence of new traits, they help the species to better adapt to the environment. However, this statement is true only for beneficial mutations. Most mutations (at least 99 percent) are harmful, and some are even lethal.

A large number of dangerous gene variations (mutation pressure) is fraught with very unpleasant consequences, especially when you consider that the achievements of modern civilization contribute to an increase in mutation pressure.

The development of medicine and the increase in the level of social security "help" defective genes be passed on to subsequent generations: glasses compensate for visual defects, insulin helps people with diabetes survive, etc.

The alternatives—letting such people die at a young age, sterilizing them, or isolating them from healthy ones—are certainly unthinkable. Thus, humanity consciously bears the burden of mutational pressure. An interesting illustration of what has been said are the results of a study conducted by Italian geneticists and doctors in Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta).

Among the Mossi people living here, malaria is not very common, although there are enough malarial mosquitoes around. It turns out that many representatives of this tribe are carriers of a special gene that makes hemoglobin inedible for malarial plasmodium. Those people who have this gene in two copies (obtained from the father and mother) are almost 100 percent protected from malaria. Those who have a protective gene inherited from only one side, sometimes still get sick. And finally, those few Mossi who do not have a special gene at all are quite susceptible to malaria.

Researchers believe that the existing cases of malaria in Burkina Faso are largely due to the fact that it is being treated with effective modern drugs. If there was no treatment, after some time those who did not have a protective gene would simply die out.

Above, we talked about the side effects of those achievements of civilization that are aimed at the benefit of man. However, one cannot remain silent about the fact that a person exposes himself (much less justifiably) to completely unnecessary exposure to radiation, which sharply increases the frequency of mutations.

We use X-rays extensively in medicine, stockpile radioactive materials, and recklessly conduct a large number of nuclear tests.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

In which English city is every elected mayor publicly weighed, and why?

In the English town of High Wycombe, each elected mayor is weighed in on the town square. This tradition dates back to 1678, when the residents decided to put an end to the behavior of mayors who stole money from the treasury, after which they got fat from a satisfying life. After a year of service, the mayor is weighed again, and the herald shouts "More!" or "Not added!". In the old days, the townspeople, having heard about weight gain, could boo the mayor and throw rotten eggs, now this part of the tradition has been canceled.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Plastic gears instead of metal ones 07.05.2015

Gears made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic can replace the usual metal gears in car assemblies.

Considering the amount of torque and power required to propel a car weighing more than a ton, it can be assumed that plastic gears will be destroyed within a couple of minutes. However, scientists from Gifu University (Japan), together with specialists from Central Fine Tool, have developed a carbon fiber reinforced plastic gear that is strong enough to replace metal parts in vehicles.

A thin layer of carbon strengthens and strengthens the gear teeth, besides, such made have significantly less weight, which means they make the car lighter and improve its fuel efficiency. Plastic gears are much cheaper to produce than their metal counterparts. Japanese engineers hope to put their development into production by 2017, finalizing and improving the design of gears.

This is not the first attempt to use plastic in the construction of automotive units - German engineers recently proposed making an internal combustion engine cylinder block out of it.
