Everyone dies alone

Hans Fallada
Hans Fallada

Phraseologism: Everyone dies alone.

Meaning: 1. Everyone decides the most important, main questions of his own life (jokingly). 2. About spiritual isolation, loneliness of a person.

Origin: The title of the novel (1947, Russian translation 1948) by the German writer Hans Fallada (pseudonym of Rudolf Dietzen, 1893-1947).

Random phraseology:

Comments are superfluous.

Meaning:

Everything is clear, obvious, understandable without explanation.

Origin:

The expression was made popular by the famous German lawyer, author of comments on commercial law G. Staub (1856-1904). In his oral presentations, he tried to state his position as clearly, exhaustively and reasonably as possible, so that no one would have any questions, and he would not have to return to the topic. He was quite successful in this, and therefore, as a rule, he ended his speech with the words: "Comments are superfluous." When the famous lawyer died, a joke was even born in the German capital that supposedly you can read his favorite phrase on Staub's tombstone: "Here lies Staub. Comments are superfluous."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Physical activity is good for the brain 09.01.2018

Researchers at the University of Western Ontario focused on short-term cognitive effects that appear immediately after physical activity. Participants in the study did moderate to vigorous exercise for 10 minutes on an exercise bike. After that, they moved on to the second part of the experiment, in which it was necessary to move the eyes in a certain way, depending on what you see on the monitor screen - this required attention and concentration. Task performance was assessed using a special system that tracked eye movements.

It turned out that immediately after exercising on an exercise bike there were fewer errors than before, and the reaction speed was reduced by 50 milliseconds. For comparison, some participants in the experiment, instead of exercising on a stationary bike, simply read a magazine, and they did not have any improvements in cognitive functions.

Aerobic physical activity facilitates mental activity in many ways: on the one hand, exercise can generally excite the nervous system, bringing it into a state of "combat readiness", and on the other hand, aerobics can affect the conduction of nervous excitation. The molecular messenger here is a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is extensively synthesized in response to aerobic exercise.

The immediate effect is that the person becomes more focused, which increases the effectiveness of executive control. This is the name given to a number of different cognitive processes by which the brain chooses how to proceed and regulates the execution of a plan of action.

These processes include processing and responding to single or multiple stimuli, scanning and updating working memory (it allows us to keep in mind the small pieces of information that we are working with at the moment), and inhibitory control, that is, inhibition of impulsive (automatic) ) reactions and replacing them with more deliberate ones.
