Oedipus complex

Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece

Phraseologism: Oedipus complex.

Meaning: One of the central concepts of Freudianism, which consists in the boy's guilt before his father because of the desire to eliminate him for the sake of unity with his mother (psychol.).

Origin: From the work "On one type of object choice in people" by the Austrian psychiatrist and psychologist, the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). The original source is an ancient Greek legend about the king of the city of Thebes, Oedipus, who unknowingly killed his father and married, without suspecting it, his own mother, who, having learned the truth, committed suicide.

Random phraseology:

Fortune.

Meaning:

Fate, happiness (joking).

Origin:

From Roman mythology. Fortune is the goddess of blind chance, good luck, happiness and misfortune (if the goddess turns her back on a person). She was usually depicted as a blindfolded woman standing on a ball or wheel. In one hand she holds a rudder from a river vessel (a sign that she controls the fate of a person), in the other - a cornucopia (meaning the well-being that she can give). And the ball or wheel on which the goddess stands, as well as the bandage over her eyes, means the inconstancy of the goddess Fortune, the changeability of her goodwill. It was traditionally depicted on almost all ancient Roman coins. Hence the expression "wheel of Fortune" - chance, blind, changeable happiness.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Global warming asymmetry 07.10.2020

New research shows that stronger nighttime warming is more common worldwide than stronger daytime warming. Scientists at the University of Exeter studied warming from 1983 to 2017 and found a difference in average annual temperature of more than 0,25°C between daytime and nighttime warming over more than half of the land surface.

Days warmed faster in some places and nights warmed faster in others, but the total area of disproportionate warming at night was twice that.

The "warming asymmetry" was mainly due to changes in cloud levels. Increased cloud cover cools the surface during the day and retains heat at night, resulting in even more warming at night.

"Warming asymmetries could have major implications for the natural world," said lead author Dr Daniel Cox of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability at Exeter's Penryn campus in Cornwall.

Stronger nighttime warming is associated with a wetter climate, and this has been shown to have important implications for plant growth and how species such as insects and mammals interact.

Greater diurnal warming is associated with drier conditions coupled with higher levels of overall warming, which increases species vulnerability to heat stress and dehydration.

"Species that are active only at night or during the day will be especially affected," the scientists say.
