How did rivers appear?

There are many rivers on earth. Small rivers and streams, merging, form larger ones. They carry their waters to the seas and oceans. Others - such as the Volga - flow into inland seas and lakes. And some, flowing through dry regions, become smaller and smaller until they disappear altogether, evaporating or leaving dry soil.

The rivers themselves receive water from precipitation, as well as from melting snow and glaciers on mountain tops, from springs or mountain lakes. Large rivers have many tributaries, that is, smaller rivers flowing into them. Even such giant American rivers as the Ohio and Missouri are in fact only tributaries of the even more full-flowing Mississippi. Each of them, in turn, is fed by smaller tributaries, so that the huge Mississippi river system consists of thousands of rivers, rivulets and streams. A piece of land, the waters of which feed a particular system, is called a river basin.

The largest is the basin of the South American Amazon River, the territory of which is 7 square meters. km. The longest river in the world is the African Nile, its length is 050 km.

Rivers not only irrigate the soil, but also destroy it, washing away little by little year after year and carrying it into the ocean. This process is slow, but over thousands of years, its results are very noticeable. A clear example of the destructive effect of the river, which it exerts even on rocks, is the Grand Canyon, formed by the American Colorado River.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

How a laser cuts flesh 21.12.2007

Scientists from the USA have found out that the laser cuts living tissue in different ways. A laser scalpel in the hands of a surgeon is no longer exotic. However, physicists still do not fully understand how it works.

Scientists from Vanderbilt University (USA), headed by Associate Professor Shane Hutson, tried to bring clarity. Having accepted that since the human body mostly consists of water, they conducted experiments on this substance, and then proceeded to look for differences in the interaction of a laser beam with biological tissues.

As it turned out, the infrared laser actually burns the substance, destroying its constituent molecules. At the same time, it fuses tissues, clogging blood vessels, so this laser is used during operations associated with large bleeding.

Pulsed lasers in the visible and ultraviolet ranges work quite differently: they excite not molecules, but individual electrons. Those generate real charge avalanches, forming plasma microclouds. Exploding, these clouds move apart the tissue molecules, damaging them to a lesser extent. It is no coincidence that such lasers are used during delicate operations on the eye or brain.

A special molecule, NADH, is responsible for the transfer of electrons in the cell. It easily absorbs photons in the near ultraviolet, and the electrons released as a result initiate the formation of a plasma cloud. But living tissues differ in their NADH content. For example, the cornea of the eye does not have this substance, so it behaves like a water gel under a laser scalpel.
