Time may not exist

02.02.2023

The researchers found that causality, not time, is the main characteristic of our universe.

Australian Catholic University expert Sam Baron believes that physics is in crisis. For the past century, scientists have been explaining the universe in terms of two extremely successful theories: general relativity and quantum mechanics. According to him, quantum mechanics successfully justifies working in the incredibly tiny world of particles and their interactions. At the same time, the general theory of relativity describes the general picture of gravity and the movement of objects.

These theories largely contradict each other. Therefore, scientists believe that they should be replaced by one common. In particular, we are talking about the theory of "quantum gravity", which should explain how gravity works on the smallest scale.

At the same time, scientists note that creating a new theory of quantum gravity is an extremely difficult task. One such attempt was string theory. She replaced particles with strings vibrating in 11 dimensions. However, string theory ran into some difficulties. The theory describes a universe similar to ours, but does not provide any clear predictions that could be tested through experiments. Thus, the theory put forward can neither be confirmed nor refuted, the scientists added.

The most famous approach after that was loop quantum gravity. It says that the fabric of space and time consists of a network of very small discrete fragments, in other words "loops". One of the most powerful features of loop quantum gravity is the abolition of time.

“Loop quantum gravity is not the only theory that eliminates time. A number of other approaches also eliminate time as a fundamental aspect of reality. There are no tables, chairs or even people in the theories of physics, and yet we still know that all this exists. We know very well that all of the above is made up of fundamental particles, but we have no idea what time can "consist" of. Until we can give a clear explanation of how time arises, it is not clear whether we can say that it exists, " - emphasized the scientists.

According to him, based on this, time may not exist in any of the available theories. However, the theories leave the causal relationship intact. That is, physics says that causality, not time, is the main characteristic of our universe.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Oxidizing molecules slow down aging 08.11.2020

Aggressive oxidizing molecules, or oxygen radicals, damage the cell's DNA, proteins and lipids, so that there seems to be no benefit from them. These oxidizing agents are inevitably formed during normal biochemical reactions, and cells have special enzymes that neutralize oxygen radicals. However, it happens that more of them are formed than usual, or that those enzymes that neutralize them begin to work poorly - and then oxidative stress occurs in the cell. It is believed that oxidative stress is one of the main causes of aging, and that many chronic diseases occur due to aggressive oxygen oxidants.

However, oddly enough, they can also be useful. For example, hydrogen peroxide, which is very unstable and easily decomposes with the formation of those same radicals - and so, hydrogen peroxide slows down aging. How he does it, found out the staff of the Technical University of Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. They studied yeast and its Tsa1 enzyme, which serves as one of the antioxidant enzymes that neutralize hydrogen peroxide. But it turned out that Tsa1, although considered an antioxidant, does not significantly reduce peroxide levels. But it plays an important role in other processes.

It is known that restriction in calories prolongs the life of a wide variety of living organisms, from yeast to monkeys. Obviously, certain signaling proteins are triggered here, which receive information that there are fewer calories entering the cell and pass it on to other proteins, these others to third ones, etc., so that all molecular processes in the cell are reconfigured so that the time cell life is lengthened. Tsa1 turned out to be one of those signaling enzymes that assess calorie levels.

If few of them enter the cell, then Tsa1, using hydrogen peroxide, oxidizes another regulatory enzyme, protein kinase A, which regulates metabolic activity. Oxidized protein kinase interacts worse with its subordinate proteins, and the metabolism as a whole slows down. As a result, the cell begins to grow more slowly, multiply - and age more slowly.

To slow down aging, Tsa1 does not need a lot of peroxide, that is, there is no contradiction with the fact that an excess of oxygen radicals is dangerous for the cell. But a certain amount of peroxide is still needed, without it the cell will not be able to switch its metabolism to an energy-saving mode. In fact, this is not the first work that talks about the benefits of moderate amounts of oxygen radicals. There is evidence that they inhibit the growth of tumors, and that the well-known antidiabetic drug metformin prolongs the life of roundworms also with the help of radicals.
