In the original screensaver for the film "Prisoner of the Caucasus, or Shurik's New Adventures" appeared Coward, who wrote the letter "X" on the fence. Then Experienced came out and wrote the letter "U" next to it. The third - Dunce, who heard the policeman's whistle and added: "dozhestvenny film."  Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why is the mosquito considered the worst enemy of man?

Imagine yourself playing or just basking in the sun on a fine summer day. And suddenly you hear some buzzing and soon you feel a sting piercing into your arm or leg. Slapping yourself hard on the spot, you look down and see a tiny speck of blood. This means that you have just entered into battle with one of the worst enemies of man. For most of us, the mosquito is nothing more than an annoying parasite whose nasal buzz annoys us so much, especially at night. Also unpleasant is the bite of a mosquito, and the way the bite itches.

But this little insect is not just a parasite. Being the distributors of malaria and yellow fever, mosquitoes played a role in the fall of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations and killed many travelers who discovered new lands. Tropical coasts and other places with a hot climate are sparsely populated and underdeveloped, largely due to the proximity to mosquitoes.

Fortunately, in recent years, people have learned to fight the diseases that these parasites spread around the world. The male mosquito feeds only on plant juices, but the female prefers blood! So only females bite and, I must say, they have the appropriate equipment for this "work"! The proboscis of the female mosquito is equipped with a sharp point with jagged edges, as well as channels for injection and suction.

As soon as the female mosquito sits on the skin, she immediately begins to bore it. It injects a chemical compound into the tiny hole that has formed, which prevents the blood from coagulating or baking, after which it sucks out the blood and flies away. Usually, the fact that this place itches is not caused by the bite itself, but by the very injected liquid. So if you kill a mosquito before it has had a chance to suck that liquid back in along with the blood, the unpleasant sensation will be even worse!

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Dolphins control their heartbeat 01.12.2020

Scientists from the Spanish Oceanography Foundation have announced that dolphins are able to control their heartbeat. Before diving, they can slow it down, and they do it "consciously", depending on how long the dive is planned.

During the study, scientists conducted experiments with three captive bottlenose dolphins. They were taught in advance to hold their breath: at the command of a person, they stopped breathing for a short, long, or arbitrary time. The researchers monitored their breathing and heartbeat.

Just before the dolphins stopped breathing, or along with the stop, their heartbeat slowed down. The deceleration was faster and stronger when the animals were preparing for a long air hold.

"Dolphins can vary their heart rate in the same way that you and I can control our breathing. This both allows us to retain oxygen longer and reduces many of the risks associated with diving, such as developing decompression," said Andreas Fahlman, leader of the research team.

In recent years, decompression and similar problems have been found in free-ranging dolphins at an alarming rate. They are associated with human economic activity, which fills the oceans with "acoustic debris". Perhaps this eternal and loud (for them) noise disrupts precisely the ability of dolphins to "plan" their dives and slow down their heart rate in advance.
