How do we breathe? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How do we breathe? Every living being must somehow breathe. All living beings breathe by inhaling oxygen. A person receives oxygen by taking air into the lungs. It seems that nothing is easier than breathing. We don't even think about how we do it. But in reality it is a very complex process. When a person inhales, air enters the body through several tubes called the "upper respiratory tract". It starts with the nose. Here, particles that can be harmful to the lungs are screened out or filtered out. In addition, the nose warms the inhaled air. From the nose, air passes down through the throat. From here, air enters into two small tubes called bronchi. Each of the bronchi connects to one of the lungs. The lungs are large, soft organs. The entire lung is surrounded by a thin covering called the pleura. The tissue of the lung somewhat resembles a thin sponge. But there are spaces in the lung, or air sacs, and it is here that air enters from the bronchi, and the necessary gases are used, and unnecessary gases are pushed out. These air spaces are called alveoli. The air we breathe contains oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour. The same gases are present in the blood, but in different proportions. When fresh air is inhaled, there is more oxygen in the alveoli than in the blood. Oxygen passes through the very thin walls of blood vessels (capillaries) and enters the bloodstream. Carbon dioxide exits the blood into the air sacs and is exhaled. Although the process of respiration is much more complex and there is much more to be said about it, the most important thing is that gas exchange allows cells to take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: How did some children's games come about? Nowadays, hide-and-seek is played for fun. But hide and seek appeared a long time ago, when this game had a completely different meaning for the people who played it. Adults usually played hide-and-seek. In some places in England there was a custom according to which, when spring came, people went out into the woods and fields to find there flowers and birds that appeared with the onset of this season. Then what was found was brought to the village so that everyone could see that spring had really come. The search for these signs of spring, which were hiding in the forests, was the beginning of the game of hide and seek. And despite the fact that a lot of time has passed since the appearance of the game, in some countries, even in our time, the one who hides sometimes imitates the cry of a bird. It is interesting that almost all children's games did not begin as games, but from some historical event or from a legend that people believed in. Sometimes some joyful events served as the beginning for them, sometimes sad ones. "London Bridge is falling" is a game that came into being under very serious circumstances. It doesn't even have anything to do with London! It refers to those times when people believed that after death people had to cross some kind of bridge. Some got on the golden bridge to heaven, while others had to go on the old, rickety bridge to meet the devil. This game is played all over the world, each country has its own name!
