How are the tarantella dance and the tarantula spider related?

The Italian city of Taranto (in ancient times - Tarentum) gave the name to both the tarantella dance and the tarantula spider. In the Middle Ages, locals believed that this spider was poisonous and its bite caused a fatal disease. The only way to cure them was a dance, the performance of which could last several hours. The movements of such a tarantella were ecstatic and almost convulsive, which symbolized the agony of a bite.

What is asthma?

Asthma is not a disease per se, but a symptom of a number of other body disorders. In asthma, a person has difficulty breathing due to problems with the passage of air in and out of the lungs. The passage of air is hampered by inflammation of the mucous membrane or organs connecting the windpipe and lung.

During an asthma attack, a person develops shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing. The attack can be both sudden and develop gradually. The only way to get rid of asthma is to find the cause and eliminate it. The reasons may be different: allergies, emotional shock or weather conditions.

If asthma develops in a person before the age of 30, the cause is usually an allergy. The patient may be sensitive to pollen, to dust, to food, to drugs, to animals. There are many types of dust and pollen that can trigger asthma. In children, asthma is especially often caused by an allergy to food: eggs, milk or flour products. According to doctors, asthma often develops due to strong emotional unrest - for example, due to family quarrels, financial troubles, and other things.

Often emotional anxiety is caused by a feeling of own uselessness, unrequited love. These sensations set off a chain reaction that eventually ends in an asthma attack. This is why a doctor's diagnosis in determining the cause of asthma is very important. It will require a complete and thorough analysis of the patient's medical history, a variety of questions about eating habits, lifestyle, environment. And if even slight deviations from the usual way of life are revealed in the patient, the doctor will be able to determine the cause of the asthma attack.

An attack can happen after visiting acquaintances who keep animals of a certain breed, after visiting the beach or eating new foods. For people with asthma, a doctor often prescribes a special diet.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

sixth sense of man 13.07.2016

It is known that many animals have magnetoreception (the ability to sense a magnetic field). First of all, these are migratory species of birds and fish, which the "built-in compass" helps to travel. In recent years, magnetoreception has been found in lobsters, worms, snails, frogs, and newts.

Wood mice and mole rats place their nests according to the direction of the earth's magnetic field, while cows and deer orient their bodies along it when they graze.

American geophysicist Joe Kirschvink (Joe Kirschvink) from the California Institute of Technology experimentally proved the ability of a person to feel the direction of the magnetic field.

The experiments were carried out in an underground laboratory: a volunteer entered a room with magnetic shielding, the walls of which were made of aluminum (the so-called Faraday cage), where there was a system of rectangular coils arranged in three perpendicular directions (the Merritt system) that created a uniform magnetic field. This arrangement of the coils allows, by changing the amount of current in them, to control the direction of the magnetic field. A possible reaction of the brain to a magnetic field was caught using electroencephalography (EEG): a change in alpha waves, visible on the EEG, should have indicated new sensations.

Within an hour, several tests were performed: in some cases, a magnetic field, approximately equal in magnitude to the earth's field, slowly rotated around the head, in others, only the natural geomagnetic field acted on a person. The tests were alternated randomly, so that neither the experimenter nor the subject knew which test was currently taking place.

It turned out that when the magnetic field rotated counterclockwise (as if the subject was looking to the right), then the alpha waves weakened sharply, and the same thing happened when the magnetic field deviated downward (corresponding to looking up). Why alpha waves react precisely to such movements of the magnetic field and do not react to movements in the opposite direction is not yet clear, but perhaps this indicates the polarity of our "magnetic compass".
