Who are Quakers?

In 1650, a man named George Fox was tried in England for his religious beliefs. He looked at his judges and said to them, "Tremble at the word 'Lord!' They were nicknamed "Quakers", and this nickname became very popular. The official name of their organization is the "Society of Friends".

George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, taught that people should be guided in their actions by an inner light. The Holy Spirit lives inside every person. Quakers refused to take an oath, even in court. They also proclaimed that they would never use physical force against anyone or engage in military conflicts. Separating themselves from other Christians, they developed special traditions, dress, and speech. They dress in monochrome gray suits, deny entertainment and use old forms of address in conversation.

Contemporary members of the Society of Friends have distanced themselves from most of the old Quaker traditions. But their meetings are still held for the most part according to traditional rules. There is no pre-prepared program for these meetings. The members of the society gather and sit in silence until the Inner Spirit comes to one of them, then that person rises and says a prayer or reads the Bible. They reject the institution of priests and church sacraments. Men and women, old and young, have equal privileges at all meetings.

Quakers have organized and run many schools and have always been active in charitable work. They were among the first to establish free schools for the poor. Since 1688 they have always opposed slavery.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Sharks are less likely to attack people 15.02.2019

In 2018, 66 unprovoked shark attacks on humans were recorded worldwide, the lowest since 2008, when 55 attacks were recorded. Another 34 attacks last year were human-instigated, nine shark attacks on boats, and one attack on a diver in a public aquarium.

In terms of geography, 32 of the 66 unprovoked attacks in 2018 took place off the coast of the United States (half of them in Florida), another 20 in Australia, three each in Brazil and Egypt, two in South Africa, one each in Bahamas, Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Thailand.

More than half of the victims (53%) were involved in surfing and related sports during the attack, 11% were diving, and another 30% were just swimming. On average, over the past ten years, shark incidents have killed six people a year worldwide.

The Florida Museum of Natural History has kept shark attack statistics in the International Shark Attack File for over 60 years. Over time, the number of attacks continues to grow. So, until the end of the 1980s, the number of attacks in a decade never exceeded 300, and during the 2010s it already exceeded 700. The peak year was 2015, when sharks attacked people for no apparent reason 98 times.
