What astronomical discovery of the XNUMXth century was classified?

In the summer of 1967, a graduate student of the famous English radio astronomer Anthony Hewish, Miss Bell, unexpectedly discovered a completely unusual radio source in the sky. It emitted short-term pulses, which were strictly periodically (every 1,33 seconds) repeated. Three more such sources with similar, almost second periods were soon discovered.

Suspecting that these signals are of artificial origin, the researchers classified their observations. For almost half a year, no one knew about them - an unprecedented case in the history of modern astronomy. Only after the scientists were convinced of the natural nature of the sources of radio pulses, the results of the observations were published.

The mysterious source of radio emission turned out to be a pulsar - a rapidly rotating and highly magnetized neutron star. By the end of 2000, more than a thousand pulsars had already been discovered, their periods ranging from thousandths of a second to several seconds.

The electromagnetic radiation of a pulsar is created by the rotational energy of a neutron star. The loss of energy leads to a slowdown in the rotation of the star, so the older the pulsar, the longer the period of its pulsation.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The lawn mower runs on grass and is guided by Google maps 03.03.2014

A US company, EcoMow, founded by engineers and students at George Mason University, has developed a lawnmower robot that can produce its own fuel from grass. EcoMow calls the main task of the project the creation of a fuel production system that can be installed on existing lawn mowers of various types.

Instead of rotating blades, the robotic lawnmower uses a trimmer driven by an electric motor. Behind the trimmer is a grass catcher with a granulator that compresses the cut grass into balls. Then these balls enter the fuel generation system. Details about the device of the fuel plant itself are not reported.

The EcoMow robot navigates the lawn using Google maps. At the same time, the user has the opportunity to independently set the type of lawn mowing and, moreover, to program the pattern that will result from the operation of the robot lawn mower. According to the company, the robot will be useful, first of all, to commercial organizations, as it will save on the use of labor and fuel. In addition, firms will be able to sell the grass compressed into pellets to processing companies.
