Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is an ice age?

The Ice Age is the time when most of the continents were covered with a thick layer of ice. These ice sheets formed when glaciers on the high mountains and in the polar regions reached large sizes. Slowly, over hundreds and hundreds of years, glaciers spread across the continents. They covered the ground with a layer of ice over 1000 meters thick! Throughout the history of the Earth, there have been several ice ages. The largest of these began about 2 years ago.

Four times during the Ice Age, the ice retreated and advanced again. Four times they melted and reappeared. The last such period ended about 18 years ago. At this time, most of North America was covered with ice. The ice moved south to what is now New York City.

Other continents in the Northern Hemisphere were also partially covered in ice, but not to the extent of North America. Earth has undergone great changes under the influence of ice. Air and ocean temperatures dropped. Today's deserts were well watered and covered with vegetation. The sea level dropped by 100 meters because a lot of water turned into ice. Then the ice began to disappear. Partly it evaporated directly into the air, partly melted.

About 6 thousand years ago, the continents of the Northern Hemisphere were almost completely free of ice. Will another Ice Age come? Scientists cannot answer this question because first they must discover the causes of the Ice Ages.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Xiaomi MIJIA Smart Audio Glasses 19.04.2023

Xiaomi has come up with an unusual solution for Bluetooth audio playback. MIJIA Smart Audio Glasses are equipped with noise reduction and double protection against unwanted eavesdropping. The speakers are open - you can hear the surrounding sound at the same time. The company promises up to 22 hours of battery life for the device.

The glasses have double protection against sound leakage, noise reduction during a call, support surround sound and connect two devices. The noise reduction algorithm uses artificial intelligence when working with both microphones. AI amplifies the sound on a call, restores the timbre, and provides a stable and clear voice communication.

The glasses are very light - their weight is only 38,1 g, the case is protected from moisture and dust according to the IP54 standard. Touch control panels are located on both sides, have a size of 30 mm and support long pressing. The search for glasses and tracking the donning works. The battery provides up to 7 hours of continuous talk time, 10 hours of continuous music playback and up to 22 hours of battery life.

MIJIA Smart Audio Glasses will be available for crowdfunding from April 12 to 26, and can be pre-ordered for 799 yuan (about $116). There are 5 frame options to choose from.
