When did restaurants appear?

You probably think that food is cooked to taste better. In fact, it helps the body absorb it better. Cooking also keeps us healthy because it kills bacteria and other micro-organisms that can harm us.

No matter how delicious mom cooks, sometimes we want to go to a restaurant (if, of course, we have enough money). And not because you want to eat something delicious. The main thing is to change the environment and communicate with people. Restaurants have not always existed. There were taverns where people gathered to talk, drink and maybe eat something. In London, such establishments were called master's shops.

At first, the workers of these shops cooked the meat that the visitors brought with them. Later they switched to their own products. It already looked like a restaurant. Such master shops existed until the XNUMXth century! The tavern in London was the first place where you could eat cooked food every day at certain hours.

Often such taverns became clubs. This happened in the XNUMXth century. In the middle of the XNUMXth century, citizens of different incomes developed the habit of dining not at home, but in taverns. Most taverns offered meals for a shilling or less. These dinners included wine and even ale.

Taverns have become meeting places for famous people. Shakespeare became a regular at the Mermaid Tavern in London. By 1765, coffeehouses were also springing up in London. There you could find coffee, tea, chocolate, which were a novelty, a curiosity at that time. Sometimes there you could eat something more substantial.

In 1765, a man named Boulanger opened an establishment in Paris that sold snacks and cooked meals. He called this place a restaurant. That was the first time the word was used. The establishment was a success, and many similar ones opened soon after. Within a short period of time, restaurants have spread widely throughout France. The word "restaurant" was used in England until the end of the 1683th century. In the United States, the first restaurant opened in Philadelphia in XNUMX. It was called "Blue Anchor".

How many times is a modern telescope sharper than the human eye?

The more light "gathers" an optical device, the less bright and more distant objects it "sees". That is why telescope mirrors are getting bigger and bigger.

The working (effective) area of the main mirror of a telescope with a diameter of 8 meters is approximately 48 square meters, and the area of \u20b\u2,5bthe human pupil at dusk is approximately XNUMX square millimeters. The telescope will collect as many times more light as its area is larger than the area of the pupil, that is, approximately XNUMX million times!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Birth control pills affect fear 08.11.2023

Scientific discoveries are lifting the veil of mystery surrounding the effects of birth control pills on the brain and feelings of fear, according to a study by scientists from Canada. This discovery could significantly change our understanding of the relationship between hormonal changes caused by contraception and the brain structure responsible for the perception of fear.

Modern scientific theories claim that hormonal fluctuations in a woman's body during the menstrual cycle can affect the brain's ability to perceive fear. Researchers from Canada set out to better understand the effects of using combined oral contraceptives (COCs) by focusing on the effects of the synthetic sex hormones they contain on brain structure.

Currently, more than 150 million women worldwide use oral contraceptives, and COCs containing synthetic versions of estrogens and progestogens remain among the most popular. The study found that a region of the brain known as the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) was thinner in women who used COCs compared to a similar region in men.

It is important to note that these changes are reversible. Comparing data from participants who stopped taking COCs or never used them, the scientists concluded that the effect on brain structure was not permanent.

The researchers found that levels of both natural and synthetic sex hormones correlated with changes in vmPFC size and thickness, but this was only observed in women using oral contraceptives.

In addition, differences were identified in the structure of the region of the brain responsible for the reaction to fear in men and women, regardless of the use of contraception. This highlights the influence of natural sex hormones on the formation of brain structure.
