For this experiment we will need: a small rectangular mirror and two long pencils. The experiment will illustrate one of the main laws of the doctrine of light - optics: the angle of reflection of the beam is equal to the angle of its incidence. It is only necessary to clarify that the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection mean the angles between the perpendicular lowered to the reflecting surface and the incident and reflected rays.

Lay a sheet of paper on the table and draw a straight line on it. Place a mirror on the paper perpendicular to the drawn line. To prevent the mirror from falling, place books behind it.

To check the strict perpendicularity of the line drawn on paper to the mirror, make sure that both this line and its reflection in the mirror are straight, without a break at the surface of the mirror. After all, if there were no mirror, the line would be completely straight, and when there is a mirror, a straight line should consist of a drawn and a reflected line. It was you and I who created the very perpendicular that was mentioned at the beginning.

Pencils will act as light rays in our experiment. Put the pencils on a piece of paper on opposite sides of the drawn line with the ends facing each other and to the point where the line rests against the mirror (see figure). Now make sure that the reflections of the pencils in the mirror and the pencils in front of the mirror form straight lines, without a break. One of the pencils will play the role of the incident beam, the other - the reflected beam. The angles between the pencils and the drawn perpendicular are equal to each other.

Pencils as rays

If now you rotate one of the pencils (for example, by increasing the angle of incidence), then you must also rotate the second pencil so that there is no break between the first pencil and its continuation in the mirror.

Every time you change the angle between one pencil and the perpendicular, you need to do this with another pencil so as not to disturb the straightness of the light beam that the pencil depicts.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

An ocean could be hiding under the surface of Pluto's moon 22.02.2016

Specialists from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) believe that in the distant past, a vast subsurface ocean could have existed on Charon.

Charon is the largest known moon of Pluto. This moon was discovered in 1978. The diameter of Charon, according to modern estimates, is 1205 km - a little more than half the diameter of Pluto itself.

The possible existence in antiquity of the ocean under the surface of Charon is evidenced by the images transmitted to Earth by the automatic station New Horizons ("New Horizons"). The fact is that the satellite of Pluto is dotted with crevices, cliffs and ledges. So, not far from the equatorial zone of Charon there is a strip of canyons with a length of about 1800 km and a depth of up to 7,5 km. Due to the features of the relief in this area, it seems that the outer layers of the satellite were stretched and torn as a result of some kind of impact.

Scientists believe that in ancient times the temperature of Charon was high enough that an ocean of liquid water could exist under the surface. However, as the satellite cooled, the water froze, expanding along the way, which led to the formation of canyons.
