Once upon a time I worked as a mechanic for gardening machines, or simply gasoline lawn mowers. Often it was necessary to cut grass and shrubs in inconvenient places and in limited areas. And the existing braids and large hand scissors are not well adapted for this kind of work. So I decided to make my work easier - to come up with a portable hand tool for cutting bushes, flower beds and lawns. He took an interest in domestic and foreign experience in the construction of such mechanisms, sketched several sketches of mowers with various drives, including electric ones. However, it was far from the implementation of the idea: either one node did not suit, then another.

Finally, after a long search, I got an electric mower, which, it seems to me, compares favorably with similar ones by the versatility of the design and can be used to cut not only the edges and inconveniences on lawns, but also bushes. He called it EKU-1: electric mower, universal, first. Here are some of its features.

Universal electric mower
Rice. 1. Options for using EKU-1: 1, 2, 3 - mowing grass near the walls of buildings, between bushes, on slopes, 4 - decorating the crowns of shrubs.

First of all, lightness, weight - 1,3 kgf. This is of great importance when processing shrubs, because the tool has to be kept on weight for hours. The bar-handle is made "breakable", which allows you to change the position of the knife depending on the working conditions and the relief of the cut surface.

EKU-1 is arranged simply: a casing is attached to the electric motor with a cutting element at the end of the shaft, and a long rod-handle is attached to the casing. The DPM-35 type motor is designed for direct current 24 V, its power is 72 W, the shaft speed is 9000 rpm. A similar one is used on some brands of transistor portable tape recorders, as well as in automation systems. But you can use electric motors from a coffee grinder or vacuum cleaner. True, it will be necessary to strengthen the insulation, since then the AC network will become the source of power supply, and the weight of the mower will increase to about 3 kgf.

The cutting element (knife) is made of two thin duralumin plates connected with M4 screws. Safety razor blades are inserted between them so that they protrude from the plates by 0,5 mm. This eliminates the breakage of the cutting edge, in addition, the use of blades frees you from constant concern for the sharpness of the knife.

To protect the engine from accidental shock loads, two separate blades can be made hinged to the flange. When manufacturing, you need to carefully balance them, otherwise the mower will quickly fail.

Rice. 3. Layout of the electric mower (click to enlarge): 1 - beam of the protective cover, 2 - razor blade, 3, 10, 13, 18 - M4 screws, 4 - top knife plate, 5 - bottom plate. 6 - knife flange, 7 - nut M4, 8 - motor shaft, 9 - motor, 11 - dome of the protective casing, 12 - motor flange, 14 - gasket. 15 - eyelet. 16 - wing nut M3, 17 - fork. 19 - sleeve, 20 - pipes of the "breaking" device

When the engine is running, the centrifugal force stabilizes the knives in the radial direction, and they easily cut grass, and when they hit a hard object, they deviate back, softening the blow.

From above the knife is closed by a protective casing; it consists of a dome and "beams" made of thin sheet duralumin. The beams that protect the blades from breakage and help mow the stems of plants are connected to the dome with folding petals on epoxy glue. The ends of the beams have protrusions that set the height of the grass cut.

A bar-handle made of a duralumin ski pole is also attached to the casing. At its upper end there is a plug connector, an engine start button and a double reverse micro toggle switch. From them, the wire goes through the pipe to the engine. (In the case of AC power, the handle is made from a plastic ski pole.)

Universal electric mower
Rice. 4. The design of the "breaking" device (click to enlarge): 1 - fork, 2 - M4 screw, 3 - bushing, 4 - oblique pipe, 5 - holes for the fixing bolt of the initial position, 6 - handle tube, 7 - bolt - intermediate position lock, 8 - pipe-casing, 9 - cable

A fork with a "breaking" device is attached to the lower end of the pipe. Fork with longitudinal stiffening rifts - made of thin sheet duralumin. "Breaking" device - a tube attached to the plug with an M4 screw on epoxy glue. Cutouts are made in it to change the position of the cutting element of the mower. The rod-handle is fixed to the ears of the protective casing with screws with wing nuts.

The figure shows the possible use of a mower with such a handle. It is obvious that another tool would hardly allow to have such reach areas. In addition, a piece of nylon cord or a metal guitar string can be used instead of a knife to cut grass on areas with uneven boundaries.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

faster than the wind 12.07.2009

The English engineer Richard Jenkins realized his old dream: he set a speed record on the iceboat. The wheeled buer "Green Bird" built by him developed a speed of 203 kilometers per hour on the surface of a dried-up salt lake in California, despite the fact that the wind speed was only 48 kilometers per hour.

The "Green Bird" is entirely made of carbon composites, only the ball bearings of the wheels and the swivel sail mount are metal. Instead of a conventional sail, a rigid wing is used, set vertically.

According to the engineer, the special lightness and aerodynamic design of the buoy make it possible to exceed the wind speed by 3-5 times. Jenkins worked on improving the design for ten years.
