Are there seven wonders of the world now?

Famous monuments of sculpture and architecture described by ancient historians and travelers:

  1. ancient Egyptian pyramids (3 thousand BC);
  2. "hanging gardens" of Babylon in Babylon (7th century BC);
  3. mausoleum in Halicarnassus (middle of the 4th century BC);
  4. temple of Artemis at Ephesus (Asia Minor, c. 550 BC);
  5. Colossus of Rhodes (statue of Helios on the island of Rhodes, c. 292-280 BC);
  6. the statue of Zeus at Olympia (Greece, c. 430 BC);
  7. lighthouse on the island Pharos in Alexandria (Egypt, 3rd century BC).

Only the pyramids have survived to this day.

People in antiquity found it hard to believe that the structures they called the "seven wonders of the world" would ever disappear. In fact, all of them, with the exception of one, ceased to exist!

The only miracle that has survived to this day is the pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. Built about 5000 years ago, it is the burial place of the pharaoh and his wife.

The walls of Babylon on the site of modern Iraq are considered the second wonder of the world. They were built around 600 BC. e. by the will of the famous king Nebuchadnezzar. Walls 100 m high, made of bricks, are now a pile of ruins.

The third wonder of the world recognized the statue of Zeus in the city of Olympia, (Greece), created by the Greek sculptor Phidias. She was a figure 12 m high, dressed in golden clothes, the body of Zeus was carved from ivory, the eyes were made of precious stones. The sculpture has not reached us.

The fourth miracle is the temple of the goddess Diana at Ephesus in what is now Turkey. The roof was supported by 18-meter rock monolith columns, and inside the temple were the best works of Greek artists. In 262 a.d. e. the invading Goths burned it down.

The fifth of the wonders of the world was the tomb of King Mausolus, who died in 353 BC. e., in the city of Halicarnassus in the territory of modern Turkey. The construction was so luxurious and so expensive that today we call the richly decorated tombs mausoleums.

The sixth wonder of the world was the Colossus of Rhodes, a bronze statue of the sun god Helios. It reached 32 meters in height and was located on the island of Rhodes. An earthquake in 224 BC e. destroyed it.

And the seventh, the last of the wonders of the world is the lighthouse in Pharos. Its construction began around 283 BC. e. on the island of Pharos, off the coast of Egypt. It is believed that the lighthouse was almost 180 meters high, a fire was burning on top, showing the way to the ships to the port. The lighthouse served for over 1500 years until it was destroyed by an earthquake.

 Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Are there channels on Mars?

There are no channels in the usual sense for us. Their discoverer, the Italian astronomer Schiaparelli (1835-1910), saw a network of thin lines on the surface of the planet, although many observers, no less experienced, did not notice them there.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Beware the bridge 10.05.2005

According to road statistics, every day in England, five buses or trucks crash with their roofs into a too low bridge over the road or into the arch of the entrance to the tunnel. There are also human casualties, and many hours of traffic jam in each such case is guaranteed.

The British company Bridge Clear has developed a system that warns the driver with an audible signal that he is approaching a bridge that is too low. The system is based on a satellite navigation device, which contains a map of the road indicating the height of all obstacles encountered above the road.

The device also remembers the height of the van or bus itself.
