No matter how well you swim, the speed will increase if you have fins on your feet. But what if you take some device in your hands? For example, sticks with blades? It will turn out something like skiing with sticks, but only on the water. Such a curious projectile can be made for a water holiday at a summer camp and arrange a speed contest.

Stick with blades

Help for flippers
The pictures show how a stick with blades works. Above: idle. the stick goes forward, the blades are folded. Below: working stroke, the swimmer pulls the stick towards him, the blades open.

Swimming sticks are made as follows: take four duralumin plates about 200x300 mm in size. Connect their long sides with a wire spiral. Insert a metal rod into the spiral so that it passes through the end of the stick - it will fix the blades to it. Now make a hole in the edges of the blades, insert a cord into them and fix its ends on the sash and on the stick. The length of the cord must be such that the open sashes form an angle of no more than 70 °.

To master the projectile, you first need to practice a little. Enter the water, having reached a sufficient depth, lie on your back and throw out your hands with a stick behind your head. Then pull up. Due to the resistance of the opened doors, you will move forward. Then push the projectile forward again, it goes easily, as the doors fold, and pull yourself up again.

If the restrictive cord is moved to the other side of the wings (for this they need to be moved higher), then the sticks can be held not behind the head, but at the feet, and not pulled up, but, on the contrary, repelled. In this case, it is better to increase the length of the pole a little. The speed of a swimmer with fins and sticks will be greater than if he swam only with fins.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop with transparent display 03.03.2024

Lenovo introduced a laptop with a transparent 17,3-inch screen called ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop.

The screen, developed using MicroLED technology, has transparency of up to 55 percent. With a white background it becomes completely opaque, and with a black background it can be seen through it, which is possible from both sides. Maximum brightness reaches 1000 nits.

Lenovo engineers suggest that this design could be useful for digital artists, allowing them to see the world behind the screen while drawing on the bottom half of the laptop, where the touch keyboard is also located. By lifting the stylus, the user can free up space for creativity as the buttons automatically hide.

A PHI camera is installed on the back of the laptop base, which can recognize objects located behind the device. Lenovo is confident that this sensor will be useful when working with augmented reality technologies.

At the moment, the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop is only a concept solution and not ready for release. In the current prototype, it is not possible to manually adjust the transparency of the entire screen, regardless of the color of the content. However, Lenovo is confident that such technologies will find application in production laptops in the next five years.
