PERSONAL TRANSPORT: GROUND, WATER, AIR
Yacht from a kayak. Personal transport Directory / Personal transport: land, water, air A kayak on the high seas... Isn't there a risk? Well, it depends on what kind of kayak. "Kachurka" - the lightest sailboat, the description of which is offered to your attention - is not afraid of either the expanses open to all winds or the sea wave. The survivability of the ship is ensured by the features of its design. Add to that directional accuracy and safety for crew and cargo in extreme weather conditions. Despite the elongated hull, the boat easily, as yachtsmen say, "recoups" from the waves, has good "germination" even on steep water shafts. All control systems work quickly and reliably, and the steering action is effective in any maneuver. The yacht "Kachurka" has a length of 5,2 m and a midship width of 0,9 m. It is made from the usual kayak "Luch", the predecessor of the "Salute", obviously, any other kayak can be equipped according to the same principle. The impetus for this creation was the fact that a canvas folding boat under sail is too light for strong winds (it just blows away) and the hull had to be made heavier, and at the same time strengthened, increased strength. Modernization works do not require special skills and are practically accessible to anyone. To begin with, you need a plywood veneer about 150 mm wide. The kayak should be assembled, the veneer should be placed under the soft skin to stiffen the contours. After that, the boat must be turned over and a protective layer should be applied to its soft hull, for example, from vaseline, grease, paraffin, and then pasted over with fiberglass on epoxy resin. Four or five layers are enough for the bottom, three for the sides, and two for the deck. The stem and stern area must be reinforced with 10 layers. A steel plate 180x30x3 mm is laid in the nasal layers. An eye is cut into it - a ring Ø 40 and a cross section of 8 mm. Another metal plate with loops goes deep into the thickening at the stern - it is designed for mounting the rudder. At the end of the gluing of the body, the veneer is removed, while the kayak acquires greater strength due to the protective shell. In addition, the air between the soft skin and the rigid hull provides the vessel with an additional margin of buoyancy. For the same purpose, 0,3 m3 of foam plastic is laid in the bow and stern parts, covered with a blank plywood bulkhead. The assembled boat should weigh about 130 kg. The mast is installed in a regular place. Its height from the spur is 3,2 m. It is preferable to make sails from dacron or other synthetic fabric. The sail area is 3 m2, the area of underwater resistance is 6% of this value. Behind the mast, between the two frames, a centerboard well is formed: a narrow box made of duralumin or hardboard. A hole is cut in the bottom of the boat, corresponding to the inner diameter of the box. Outside, two 50X50 mm duralumin corners are inserted into it. The box is fixed from the inside with two wooden bars 40x50 mm and tightened with bolts. Corners and overhead bars are covered with sealant. Holes for the centerboard axis and bolts are drilled in advance, before the well is assembled. The gap between the centerboard and the corners should be 2 mm. A dowel 8 mm thick and 500 mm high is sawn out of hardboard. A stopper pin is hammered into the back of the box, on which the protrusion of the daggerboard extended to the stop rests. Cleaning - with a steel cable drawn through the block on the mast to the helmsman and locking on the duck. On the back of the well in front of the helmsman is a K-17 liquid compass. In the bow of the hull, two duralumin loops are attached to the underdeck beam of the set (see. Fig.). The first is for the stay, on which the staysail is sewn tightly. The second is for installing the rear part of the support platform under the twist mechanism and a double block (brace wiring). The twist knot works under heavy loads, especially in the radial direction, so it must be securely fixed. In front of the mast, close to it, on the bulwark there is a transverse duralumin pipe Ø 40 and 1250 mm long. On it are fastened shrouds on lanyards and blocks for wiring braces for spinning the staysail. The bow end spaced on both sides is also displayed on it - a nylon cable 8 mm thick. It is passed through a powerful lobe, sheathed in leather and mounted on the eye. About a meter from it to the bow end, a tight rubber cord 1 m long is tied up. Having stretched the cord as much as possible along the bow, mark this place and knit its second end here. Thanks to the rubber shock absorber, the bow slack will be gently, without jerks, selected at anchorage and during towing.
The length of the bow is 50 m, which meets the rules for a vessel of this size. At its wet end, a fire is made with a thimble, for which a Danforth anchor weighing 3 kg or a floating anchor is attached through the lobe. The mast is made up of two duralumin tubes Ø 30 mm, with a total length of 3200 mm. A duralumin tube Ø 15 mm, cut along the length, is attached to it on duralumin clamps-segars, which serves as a movable lipase. Outside, everything is covered with a casing of two layers of fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. This design ensures the correct aerodynamics of the front of the mainsail. At 700 mm from the tack, a shkertik is sewn to the mainsail, which is carried through a block under the boom to the helmsman. With it, it is easy to extinguish the mainsail in strong winds. Armor must be sewn horizontally. The boat is protected from flooding by a movable apron made of rubberized fabric - "silver". Mounted on duralumin ribs, it easily walks along the skids along the bulwark. A rubber cord is sewn to the ribs in a stretched form, which allows, if necessary, to instantly “shoot off” the protective cover. From the front, the apron is attached to the wave baffle with screws. The steering wheel is semi-balanced, duralumin, with a relative depth of 1: 2; pen thickness - 3 mm. With such modernization, the kayak loses its main distinguishing quality - portability. But it turns out almost a new vessel, which has a whole range of advantages. For group trips with a large load, catamarans or trimarans can be assembled from several boats.
