The plant kingdom covers 3 major taxa: red algae, or purple algae, true algae and higher plants. The most ancient are purple. The discovered fossil, belonging to the genus Bangia, is approximately 1,2 billion years old.

Among the higher vascular plants, the most ancient are ferns and horsetails. Three species have been growing for 350 million years: panicled fern, horsetail and club moss. Their giant ancestors grew 300 million years ago in the forests of the Carboniferous period, and their biomass turned into the coal that we now mine.
