Did you know?

Who does the hynk-hynk?

Albanian pig.

Albanian dogs do "ham-ham".

In Catalonia, dogs bark bap-bap. Chinese say "wang-wang", Greek - "bow-wow", Slovenian - "hov-hov", Ukrainian - "gaff-gaff". In Iceland it's woff, in Indonesia it's gong-gong, and in Italian it's bau-bau.

Interestingly, the less variation in the sound produced by a particular animal, the more readily different languages converge in its interpretation. So, in almost every language, a cow mooes "moo", a cat meows "meow", and a cuckoo cuckoos "coo-coo".

According to scientists from the Center for the Study of Animal Behavior in Cumbria, dogs are even acquiring a local accent. It is most pronounced in Scottish and Liverpool quadrupeds. Liverpool have a slightly higher voice, but the Scots have a "lighter tone".

To collect the necessary data, the Center's specialists turned to the owners and their pets with a request to leave a voice message on the answering machine, and then compared the pitch, tone, volume and length of sounds made by a dog and a person.

As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that dogs imitate the voices of their owners in order to demonstrate their affection: the stronger it is, the more noticeable the similarity in sound.

In addition, dogs tend to copy the behavior of their owners. For example, a terrier living in a family of young people is more likely to be energetic and rebellious. But the same dog that got to the owner-old woman turns into a quiet and passive creature, prone to long periods of sleep.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What emotions of a dog can be recognized by the nature of the wagging of its tail?

When a dog wags its tail, it can mean more than just joy and friendliness. The dog's positive emotions are most evident when the waggle is asymmetrically shifted to the right. But if the movements of the tail shift to the left, this means that she has met something frightening or annoying. Moreover, dogs not only convey their emotions in this way, but also recognize the gestures of other dogs. When showing a video recording of relatives with a left-handed tail wag, the devices detect a rapid heartbeat and signs of anxiety in dogs, and when a wagging to the right is shown, no changes in the behavior of the experimental subjects are observed.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

High power controller with over 90% efficiency 31.05.2009

Texas Instruments announced the release of a high-performance controller for Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices consuming 13 or 26 watts of electrical power. For example, the controller is suitable for IP phones, wireless access points and surveillance cameras.

The new integrated controller TPS23754 meets all the requirements of the IEEE 802.3at (pre-release 4.0) standard, supports DC/DC converter topologies that achieve more than 90% power conversion efficiency. These topologies reduce heat dissipation and increase system reliability.

The new single-chip PoE solution is manufactured using processes that allow surge voltages up to 100 V, which allows the development of reliable devices with a power of 13 or 26 W. TI provides samples of the TPS23754 controller, as well as the TPS23756, which supports input voltages as low as 12V. With this controller, PoE device designers can use widely available low-cost 12V network adapters.

The TPS23757 controller will also be released to support 13W and lower devices requiring higher efficiency DC/DC conversion topologies.
