Which animal populations still don't mix because of the former Iron Curtain?

Although the "iron curtain" on the border between Czechoslovakia and the FRG, which was a live fence with barbed wire, has long disappeared, the deer living here, with rare exceptions, do not cross the border. This conclusion was made after many years of observation of animals that were wearing collars with GPS navigators. Reindeer follow their mother from birth and develop migration routes, so Czech and German deer still have different habitats, although at present nothing separates them and all living animals were born after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What was the last country that Scotland invaded?

Panama.

One of the last projects of Scotland before the "Act of Union" of 1707, which annexed it to England and Wales and formed Great Britain, was an ambitious attempt to create its own colony in Darien, as Panama was formerly called.

This whole crazy idea was invented by one person - William Paterson, founder of the Bank of England. Paterson saw in the project the possibility of creating a Scottish trading outpost in Central America, which would serve as a link between the wealth of the Pacific Ocean and the trading countries of Western Europe.

The British pretty quickly deleted themselves from the list of partners. At that time, they were just at war with France and did not want to take risks so as not to arouse the wrath of the Spaniards (who also had views of Panama). Hearing of Paterson's intention, the British government forbade its subjects to invest in the project. Then Paterson decides to look for the necessary funds north of the border. The enthusiasm of the Scots exceeded all his expectations: in six months, Paterson managed to raise 400 thousand pounds sterling - a huge amount for those times, equal to a third of the total aggregate capital of the entire nation. Almost every Scot who could afford it invested £5.

In 1698, the first batch of five ships set sail in the port of Leith and arrived at their destination in November of that year. Regrettably, the expedition turned out to be completely unprepared and ill-informed. The land that the Scots intended to turn into New Caledonia turned out to be an unsuitable swamp for agriculture, where mosquitoes swarmed. The Indians absolutely did not need stocks of wigs, mirrors and combs, with which the colonists hoped to trade with them. The English colonies located in the same areas were strictly forbidden to enter into trade relations with newcomers, and the Spaniards met the Scots as irreconcilable enemies.

Within six months, 200 of the 1200 settlers died from malaria and other tropical diseases, and the death rate reached ten people a day. In addition to the fact that the unfortunate had to bend their backs day and night to drain the swamp, all the provisions brought from their homeland quickly fell into disrepair, and by the beginning of summer there were no more than a pound of weekly supplies of gray flour eaten by larvae for each settler. Rumors of an impending Spanish attack were the last straw. Only 300 settlers managed to return to Scotland.

The Darien adventure ended in complete failure for Scotland, becoming a real national disaster. She not only undermined the morale of the Scots, but also left the country's economy in a huge debt - 250 thousand pounds. Seven years later, the country was forced to sign the "Act of Union with England." The Scots unanimously believed that the English had deliberately withheld their help in order to insult and humiliate Scotland and make union inevitable. The popularity of the Jacobite resistance in the next forty years can be safely linked to the horrors of the Panamanian expedition and the dashed hopes of the Scots.

As for Darien itself, it still remains a very inhospitable place, completely covered with dense jungle. Even the Pan-American Highway, meant to eventually connect Alaska and Argentina, breaks off at the Darien Gap.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Compact optical quantum switch 30.10.2020

Quantum computers based on lasers with qubits in the form of trapped ions are interesting, but very cumbersome. The laser beam travels many meters across a whole system of mirrors, lenses and other equipment before hitting a pair of entangled ions. Scaling such systems up to hundreds and thousands of qubits is another concern. Especially when you consider that the traps (qubits) are cooled almost to absolute zero. But there is a solution to the problem, and it has been tested.

A few years ago, a group of researchers from MIT proposed directing a laser beam at qubits not through air (as in the example in the photo below), but through waveguides inside a chip with an ion trap. This proposal was recently implemented by a group of scientists from the ETH Zurich (ETH Zurich). Researchers have designed, built and tested what is essentially an optical quantum switch that could pave the way for scalable general purpose quantum computers.

A silicon chip with 100 nm thick waveguides was fabricated using a classical process technology. In the picture you can see a schematic representation of the chip in the place where the laser beam breaks free - exits the tip of the waveguide inside the chip and hits a pair of entangled ions. Ions, in turn, are captured by two electrodes - each with its own, and together they are in an entangled state in such a system.

In the proposed solution, the waveguides can be separated to control many very densely packed traps. This simplifies the optical system and protects it from interference and errors. In production, such traps will be very cheap, but the main thing is that such solutions will help to significantly and cost-free increase the number of qubits in optical quantum computers.
