Who is an osprey?

In the United States, the common name for the osprey is "fishing hawk". This name is quite consistent with the lifestyle of this bird. He has an unusually keen eye for prey. It flies at an altitude of 15 to 75 meters and surveys the water below. Suddenly he sees a fish close to the surface of the water.

Moreover, the fish has such a neutral color that a person from the shore will not even notice it! But the hawk sees her and rushes down to seize her trembling prey with her claws. Then he carries it to the top of some tree, so that he can take his time to feast on it.

When hunting, the osprey usually flies over the selected area in different directions, slowly flapping its wings and sometimes hovering. Her downward thrust is sudden and precise. The bird hits with a strong splash, almost sinking into the water. But it does not dive because it is not a water bird.

The length of the osprey is approximately 60 centimeters, and the wingspan is approximately 1,5 meters. She has a short, hooked beak, which she does not use to grab or hold. This task is performed by strong paws and claws. The head, neck and abdomen of the osprey are pure white, with the exception of black marks or stripes on the head. The back and wings are dark brown.

There is only one type of osprey. It is found in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as in the Malay Peninsula, Australia and Caledonia. Since the only food of the osprey is live fish, it always lives near the outlets.

One of the features of the osprey's lifestyle is the huge and ugly nest that it builds. She does not try to hide her nest and adds new material to the old nest every year. Over time, a bulky pile of twigs, small twigs, pine bark and needles accumulates. As a result, the nest is up to 1,8 meters deep and weighs from 315 to 450 kilograms. It can be located quite openly on top of a tall pine tree, on a sandy beach, or on the roof of some shed. It is always built from a wide variety of materials.

Why did Hercules have to fight the Amazons?

At the request of his daughter Admeta, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to get the golden belt of the god of war Ares, which was worn by the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta.

Taking with him several volunteers, Hercules went on a ship to the Amazons. Hippolyta, captivated by Hercules' muscular body, offered him the belt of Ares as a gift as a token of her love. However, Hera was already there and, dressed up as an Amazon, began to spread the rumor that the strangers wanted to kidnap Hippolyta. Hearing these words, the excited warriors mounted their horses and hurried to the ship.

Hercules, suspecting betrayal, immediately killed Hippolyta, took off her belt and prepared to stand up for himself. He killed all the leaders of the Amazons in turn, and then put their army to flight. Some, however, say that Hippolyta refused to voluntarily give up the girdle to Hercules, and they fought in a specially prepared place. Hercules knocked Hippolyta out of the saddle and stood over her with a raised club, offering mercy, but she chose not to give in and die.

According to another version, Hippolyta survived and led the campaign of the Amazons against Athens in order to avenge the kidnapping of her sister Antiope by Theseus. Having been defeated, Hippolyta was captured, and then, becoming the wife of Theseus, bore him a son, Hippolytus.

Some genes that are silenced immediately after the birth of an organism become active again immediately after its death, and continue to work in a dead body for several more days.

It may seem strange and even unnatural, but many genes really work in the body even after its death. Forensic experts who study the blood of a corpse or, for example, the liver, have known about such post-mortem activity for a relatively long time, but researchers from the University of Washington, together with colleagues from the University of Alabama and the Max Planck Society, decided to recalculate, if possible, all "post-mortem" genes, and also find out how long they work.

Genetic activity was measured in the bodies of mice and fish Danio rerio, and the gene yield was very large - after life in fish and rodents, as it turned out, more than 1000 genes still function for some time. At first, it was assumed that all of them would soon, that is, after a few hours, fall silent, but everything turned out to be not entirely true: hundreds of genes remained in working order a few days after the death of the "owners" (in mice, such genes worked for another two days, and in fish - as many as four). Moreover, the “otherworldly” genetic activity was not at all manifested in the fact that the genes gradually fell silent: some of them, for example, first accelerated during the day, and only then began to work more and more slowly, and, finally, stopped forever. Such dynamics obviously depends on the energy and other resources that still remain in the dying cell and which can be used for RNA synthesis.

The discovery will be useful to criminologists, who, according to post-mortem genetic activity, could, for example, additionally specify the time of death.
