What color is Mars? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? What color is Mars? Burnt sugar colors. Or brown. Or orange. Or maybe khaki with pale pink flecks. One of the most familiar signs of Mars is the red color against the night sky. The redness, however, is due to the dust contained in the planet's atmosphere. The surface of Mars itself is a completely different story. The first sensational images of the planet came from the Viking 1 orbiter exactly seven years after Neil Armstrong's famous moon landing. They depicted a huge red desert dotted with dark rocks, exactly as expected. This immediately alerted those who are accustomed to seeing the catch in everything: they said that NASA deliberately "shamanized" the pictures in order to give them a familiar look. The fact is that the cameras of the descent vehicles of both Vikings, which reached the surface of Mars in 1976, did not take color pictures. Digital images were captured in grayscale (the technical term for black and white) and then passed through three color filters. Adjusting such filters to give the image "truthfulness" is an extremely tricky thing and as much an art as a science. And since no one has ever been to Mars, we have no idea what its true color is. In 2004, The New York Times stated that the first color photographs of Mars were published with a slight "over pink", and subsequent adjustments confirmed that the surface of the planet was closer in color to burnt sugar. For the past couple of years, the American Mars rover "Spirit" has been working on the planet. The most recent published photographs taken with it show a greenish-brown landscape with blue-gray rocks and patches of salmon-colored sand. Most likely, you and I will never know the true color of Mars until someone gets there and tells what they saw. In 1887, the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli made the first map of the surface of Mars. In the light areas, the scientist saw a network of long straight lines, which he called canali ("ducts"). However, when translated from Italian, the word canali was misunderstood and renamed into channels - this is how rumors about civilization and life on Mars were born. It is believed that water is present on Mars - in the form of steam, as well as in ice sheets at the poles - but as for the "channels" of Schiaparelli, their existence could not be confirmed even with the help of modern space telescopes. The capital of Egypt, Cairo, by the way, got its name from the planet Mars (in Arabic "Al-Qahir" - "Conqueror of heaven"). Author: John Lloyd, John Mitchinson Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: Can a cat see in the dark? Perhaps you have a cat at home. You love to hold your pet in your arms, play with her and feel that she is almost a member of the family. But a cat is one of the strangest creatures on earth. Despite being tamed and living with humans for thousands of years, it always seems like it only takes one step for her to return to the jungle. The cat is a close relative of the lion, tiger and leopard, and in principle behaves the same way as they do. For example, a cat lies in wait for a victim, and then jumps on her back in the same way as a lion kills his enemies. A cat can make a jump of two meters! She has soft pads on her paws, which allows her to absolutely silently sneak up on the victim. And in the paws are hidden 18 claws, which she can release and put back. But what gives a cat the ability to see in the dark? Her eyes can adjust to light sources of varying brightness. In bright light, her pupils look like narrow slits. In the dark, they become wide, almost the entire eye. This does not mean that a cat can see in absolute darkness, it just needs much less light than other animals. The eyes of cats are convex, which allows you to collect light rays from a wider area. When her eyes reflect all this light, they seem to glow. Cats can live from 13 to 20 years, but their average lifespan is 14 years.
