Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is smog?

In England, significant efforts have been made to control smoke, especially from domestic boilers and factory chimneys. In some areas, coal-fired boilers are prohibited.

In some cities, a mixture of various industrial gases released into the atmosphere forms a mist, which is called "smog". When it enters the lungs, it causes coughing. In the presence of individual gases and tiny particles in the smog, such smog becomes poisonous.

So, dust is always present in the air. Dust is the smallest particles that are suspended in the air. Dust is formed during soil erosion, during volcanic eruptions, from exhaust gases and industrial waste. The latter can be observed when looking at the smoking factory chimneys.

It is difficult to imagine the amount of dust in the air. It is believed that annually over the territory of the United States is about 39 tons of dust! 000 tons of this mass is dust from natural sources, therefore, about 000 tons of dust is the result of human activity!

Naturally, most of the dust in industrial cities. For example, this is how much dust settles on every square kilometer in major US cities: Detroit - 65 tons, New York - 55 tons, Chicago - 55 tons, Pittsburgh - 42 tons, Los Angeles - 30 tons. In a city with a large number of industrial enterprises, up to 180 tons of dust can fall monthly.

This is a very serious problem for human health, so many cities are taking active measures to reduce air pollution. Equipment that emits a lot of dust is equipped with dust collectors. Ventilation systems and electrical appliances are also used. In some cases, wet drilling and water spraying are used. However, the problem of dangerous air pollution - the problem of smog - has not yet been solved.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The Metaverse may be worse than social networks 01.12.2021

Modern technologies are shifting towards virtual and augmented reality, creating space to accommodate the metaverse. Skeptics are negative about this trend and believe that the metaverse can lead to the end of the reality known to people. As the inventor of the first augmented reality system, Louis Rosenberg, suggests, the metaverse could be much worse than social networks.

Augmented Reality and the Metaverse seek to present content in the most natural way possible, thereby "changing the sense of reality", removing boundaries in people's minds and distorting the interpretation of everyday experience.

“Personally, it scares me. Augmented reality will radically change all aspects of society and not necessarily for the better,” Rosenberg explained.

According to the expert, social networks manipulate reality by filtering the content displayed to users. People are increasingly dependent on corporations to provide and maintain countless layers of technology between people and their daily lives.

As Rosenberg believes, augmented reality will become such an integral part of life that people will not be able to simply take off their augmented reality glasses and deal with real problems. Removing points means that a person will be at a disadvantage social, economic and intellectual position. Rosenberg urges everyone to be careful, as augmented reality can easily be used to split society and sow discord among people.
