FACTORY TECHNOLOGIES AT HOME - SIMPLE RECIPES
Brown mordant for copper, brass and bronze items. Simple recipes and tips Directory / Factory technology at home - simple recipes For surface painting copper things in beautiful and durable reddish brown color you can use the following composition: 4 parts by weight of copper acetate (verdigris), 4 parts of crocus and 1 part of horn scraps. Thoroughly crush and mix with enough vinegar to form a slurry. After lubricating the surface of the thing with this composition and letting it dry, the thing is heated until the composition turns black; after that it is washed off and the thing is polished - a beautiful reddish-brown color is obtained. If you want the color to be dark chestnut, then 1 part of copper sulphate (in powder) is added to the mixture; for a lighter, yellowish (similar to bronze), staining, instead of copper sulfate, mix 1/2 - 1 part of borax. Artistic copper products (figurines, medals, etc.) it is best to paint with one of the following compositions: 1) 32 parts by weight of copper acetate (verdigris) in powder, 30 3/4 parts of crushed ammonia and 1 part of strong vinegar boil with 20 parts of water. Give after boiling. stand and carefully drain the clear solution without sediment, into which you immerse things for 1/4 hour. 2) 5 parts of copper acetate (crystalline), 7 parts of ammonia, 3 parts of acetic acid and 85 parts of water. Immerse a copper object strongly heated over a charcoal fire into the solution. When the thing is painted, remove, rinse, dry and rub with a solution consisting of 1 part of wax and 4 parts of turpentine. 3) Boil 2 parts by weight of ammonia, 1 part of common salt, 1 part of saltpeter, 1 part of strong ammonia with 96 parts of strong vinegar and immerse things in the boiling solution, keeping them there until they are properly stained. After removing, rinse first in a hot solution of ammonia in water, and then in boiling water. If things are inconvenient to immerse in solutions, then they can be lubricated with a sponge moistened with these solutions; but you need to lubricate evenly and, most importantly, quickly, otherwise the staining may turn out to be spotty. You can also lubricate things with a liquid gruel prepared from 2 parts of copper acetate, 2 parts of cinnabar and 5 parts of ammonia with the right amount of vinegar. Lubricated things are heated, washed and dried several times until the staining takes on the desired shade. For browning real fabrics bronze (i.e. from an alloy of copper and tin) it is better to use one of the following solutions: 1) 4 parts of ammonia, 1 part of potassium oxalate and 200 parts of vinegar. Things are lubricated with this composition, allowed to dry. This operation is repeated until things get the desired color. The rather sharp metallic luster remaining on things after this soon disappears, and they acquire that pleasant soft brownish color, which under ordinary conditions is formed on bronze only after a few years (patina). 2) 1 part of crystalline copper acetate, 1 part of ammonia and 200 parts of water. Having smeared the surface of the thing with this composition, it is dried over a fire until the green coloring begins to disappear. The above composition is diluted with another 340 parts of water and the thing is lubricated with such a diluted solution 10-15 more times, each time drying it over the fire. This diluted composition can be prepared separately: 1 part of copper acetate, 2 parts of ammonia and 600 parts of water. This is even necessary if one has in mind to operate sequentially on many things. After the first lubrication, the color has an olive-green color, but then it gradually takes on a more and more pleasant brown tint, which does not disappear even from very strong heating of things. Copper, brass and bronze things can also be dyed a very beautiful brown with a solution of bismuth in strong nitric acid: things after immersing them in this solution are kept over fire until the desired brown color is obtained.
