What is the Blue Ribbon?

The blue ribbon is a prize established in the 27th century. in the UK for passenger ships that have covered the distance from England to Australia faster than others. At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the "Blue Ribbon of the Atlantic" was established - a prize for a passenger ship that covered the distance from England to North America faster than others. The first winner of this prize was the British liner Mauritania, which sailed at an average speed of XNUMX knots.

The Blue Ribbon of the Atlantic was successively won by the German Bremen (1929), the French Normandy (1935), the British Queen Mary in 1952 and in the same year the American liner United States, which set a hitherto unbroken record - 35,5 knots (about 66 km / h). He crossed the Atlantic in 3 days 10 hours. The famous "Titanic", also participating in the fight for this prize, sank in the North Atlantic as a result of a collision with an iceberg.

Since 1956, most passengers have already crossed the Atlantic by plane.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Synesthesia can be induced under hypnosis 20.12.2017

Synesthesia is a neuropsychiatric phenomenon when the type of stimulus and the type of sensations do not match, that is, the stimulus refers to one sense organs, and the sensations to others. Synesthesia has different types: for example, with color-graphic synesthesia, a person sees the image of letters or numbers in color, with musical-color music, music is perceived in the form of naturally and involuntarily manifested color spots, stripes, waves; in kinetic-auditory synesthesia, a person hears sounds by watching moving objects or flashes, even if they are not accompanied by any real sound.

At one time it was believed that synesthesia is either there or not. However, over time, it became clear that it can occur under the influence of various factors in people who have not had any synesthesia since birth. The factors can really be very different: from brain injuries and tumors to certain psychoactive substances and meditation. Researchers from the University of Turku have found that synesthesia is possible even under hypnosis.

The experiment of psychologists looked quite simple: it was necessary to name the colors of different geometric shapes - crosses, circles, squares, etc. The participants in the experiment were hypnotized and inspired that a specific color is characteristic of a certain figure (for example, a circle is always red, and a cross - blue). The volunteers were then taken out of hypnosis and asked to look at the figures.

Those who turned out to be especially sensitive to hypnosis did manage to merge color and symbol together, although everyone to a different degree (for example, one person did not have an unambiguous fusion of color and shape, but instead had difficulty identifying color in general - seeing colored crosses, circles and squares, he could hardly determine what they were painted in).

Other participants in the experiment who tried to reprogram their own perception without hypnosis, just by diligently thinking about green squares and blue crosses, did not experience any synesthesia. In other words, it was all about hypnotic suggestion.
