How did spam exist when there were no computers?

The word SPAM appeared in 1936 - under this brand, an American company produced spicy canned meat ("SPiced hAM"). To sell their stocks of not the first freshness after the Second World War, a massive advertising campaign was carried out, which became the standard of importunity after the sketch of the Monty Python troupe. In 1986, a number of identical messages appeared on Usenet conferences from a certain Dave Rhodes, who advertised a new pyramid scheme. Someone drew an analogy between such a mailing list and canned food, and since then the word spam has taken on a new meaning.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why does a cat need a mustache?

The feline family includes animals from the small domestic cat we keep as fun to Siberian tigers weighing 275 kg or more. But no matter where they live, no matter what their size and appearance, all cats have a body suitable for hunting. The cat has whiskers that help it make the whole hunting path. When a cat sneaks up on a prey, she is completely absorbed in it, her eyes and ears are tuned only to hunt, and her whiskers help her learn more about what is happening around her.

For example, when a cat sticks its head into a dark hole, the whiskers feel the walls of this hole and tell where its boundary is. Or the whiskers bump into the mouse and tell the cat where the prey is. Thus, the long hairs of the cat's whiskers are very important for the animal, because the cat depends on them when other senses cannot supply it with information.

Cats have very subtle sense organs. Excellent hearing and sense of smell. The eyes of this animal are very keen and directed forward, like our eyes. This allows the cat to focus both eyes on one object and estimate the distance to it. The cat's eyes are also adapted to see in the dark. During the day, the pupils are constricted, and at night they are wide open to let in all the available light. The back wall of the eye is covered with a substance that reflects well every ray of light that enters the eye.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

New automation in Nissan cars 19.07.2014

Japanese automaker Nissan promises to bring to the mass market several systems that can take control of the car at a certain point in time. In addition to automatic driving at intersections, Nissan cars will be able to park themselves, navigate through traffic jams and maneuver on a multi-lane road.

Renault-Nissan Alliance President and CEO Carlos Ghosn, speaking at a press conference at the Foreign Journalists' Club in Japan, said that by the end of 2016 many Nissan models will have autopilot for driving on busy city roads. By the same time, the manufacturer will release a fully automatic parking system.

The top manager did not specify the capabilities of the parking assistant. It is possible that the electronic assistant will independently find a parking space, park the car, and then return it to the owner. This functionality has previously been demonstrated by Volvo.

In 2018, Nissan promises to introduce a system of simultaneous control of multiple lanes. With its help, the car, recognizing other road users and various obstacles on the road, will be able to choose the safest lane for driving. Also, by the end of the current decade, cars of the Japanese brand will be able to drive through intersections without the participation of a driver.
