How does a bullfinch look in the lens of a night vision device in a cold winter?

If you point the lens of a night vision device at a bullfinch in cold winter (as well as any other bird that feels comfortable in winter cold), only a bird's eye will appear on the screen.

The fact is that the thermal conductivity of bird feathers and down is very low (1,5-2 times less than the thermal conductivity of dry air), and therefore the down and feathers of a bullfinch reliably protect it from heat loss even in the most severe frosts.

The wool and fur of many animals have the same property. It is said that at one time attempts to detect with the help of night vision devices the caravans of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, smuggling weapons from Pakistan at night, ended in failure: they were protected by blankets made of camel hair.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Electric car charges in 30 minutes 04.05.2013

Siemens and Volvo have teamed up to find a solution to the problem of long battery charging times in electric vehicles. They have already developed a number of related technologies, thanks to one of which it takes a maximum of an hour and a half to replenish the charge.

Everything is implemented in the form of a special 22-kilowatt charger, which is currently being tested on the Volvo C30 Electric electric car. This, we note, is the first on-board charger in the world that operates from a 3-phase current source. By connecting to the appropriate outlet, this charger will accumulate energy in the battery in an hour and a half, which is enough for 165 kilometers. And for an 80 percent charge, just half an hour is enough.

This is indeed a significant breakthrough as 99% of electric vehicles have to be tethered to a power outlet for 8 hours in order for their battery to be fully charged. The German company Siemens, which helped Volvo develop a new charger, at the same time upgraded the electric motor of the C30 Electric car - now it produces 120 hp. power at a torque of 250 Nm. The maximum speed of the car is 125 km / h, and acceleration to hundreds takes only 5,9 seconds.

Manufacturers installed the new charger directly under the hood, bringing the plug hole into the radiator grille and, thus, fitting it as harmoniously as possible into the design of a production car. The compact Volvo C30 Electric hatchback, despite having a 24-kilowatt battery pack, has a fairly spacious interior. Together with the battery, the mass of which was 330 kilograms, the car weighs 1725 kg. Its cost after completion of Siemens is not specified.
