When were lamps invented?

Until the time when man invented a way to get fire, he received heat and light from the sun. And since he could not manage his work, the person was very dependent on him in the fight against cold and darkness.

Perhaps, after a person learned to make a fire, he noticed that some materials burn better than others. And he probably noticed that when the fat falls into the fire, it gives a bright light. Over time, people began to specifically select materials that gave more light when burned. Chips of certain types of wood were inserted into holes in the wall, and they burned slowly. Pine branches were used as a torch. Animal fat was placed in hollows in the stones and a moss wick was placed there. This is how oil lamps were born. When this happened, we do not know, since history is silent about this.

In New England, lard was used in lamps until 1820. Oil was also isolated from whale oil, which was used in lamps. In fact, any oil that could be easily obtained was suitable for lighting. And in the Mediterranean region grew a lot of olive trees. Olive oil was used for this purpose. The Japanese and Chinese extracted oil for their lamps from various nuts. Today, we would certainly use peanut butter if people did not find combustible minerals underground.

Oil was discovered in 1859. If you heat it in a closed vessel, you can get a light colorless liquid, which is called kerosene. It was then that they began to often use it in lamps. True, at first it was called "coal oil", since oil was often associated with coal.

You probably have a kerosene lamp at home. Many people keep it at home in case the power goes out.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why conduct a population census?

The census is a phenomenon as old as the collection of taxes or the creation of an army, although in earlier centuries it could have been called differently. In the past, rulers conducted a census in order to know how many people they could send to war and how much money they could collect from their subjects. Naturally, they tried their best to hide the truth from ordinary people who suffered from the consequences of the census.

In most countries, the population census asks people only the most important and at the same time simple questions regarding the age of people living in the house, their family ties, place of birth and nationality, and place of work. Sometimes questions are included about the date of marriage and the number of children, and in some cases (in rural areas) about the size of the family plot of land and the number of livestock. After collecting all the information, it is summarized and analyzed.

The results of the analysis are reported to the government. They play an important role in planning such areas of its activity as building the required number of schools in a particular region, forecasting the cost of pensions for the elderly, etc. When comparing the figures just obtained with the results of the previous census, one can judge whether the population, the rate of migration of people from the countryside to the city. They are objective indicators of improvement or deterioration in the living conditions of the population, development or decline in a particular industry.

In countries where government representatives are elected by vote, the number of representatives of a particular region in parliament is determined based on the results of the census.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food.
