How does excessive alcohol consumption affect brain cells?

It is widely believed that alcohol kills brain cells. However, a study of deceased alcoholics and teetotalers showed that the number of neurons preserved in their brains was about the same. However, drinkers showed a decrease in the density of white matter in the old cortex, which consists of processes of neurons. This may explain the memory problems often encountered in alcoholics, since the hippocampus responsible for memory is located in the old cortex. These destructions are not irreversible - if a person stops drinking, the density of white matter may well recover.

What cloned animals have scientists managed to introduce glow genes that can be turned on and off?

South Korean geneticists have experimentally proved the possibility of controlled "reprogramming" of complex organisms. They developed a line of cloned dogs that glow when exposed to ultraviolet light if a special substance is present in their bodies. The eGFP gene, responsible for the synthesis of an improved green fluorescent protein, was inserted into the dog's DNA, and it only worked if a drug that included it was added to the animal's food. This ability was passed from the female to some of her puppies already without any intervention of geneticists. These studies have great promise for combating human diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, because many of them are also inherent in dogs, and the glow gene can be replaced by any other gene.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Liars get warm noses 10.12.2012

When a person lies, he experiences the "Pinocchio effect" - the temperature of his nose, as well as the muscles in the inner corner of his eyes, rises. In addition, our facial temperature rises if we think hard or experience anxiety. These are just some of the findings from a groundbreaking study carried out at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Granada, which is looking for new applications for thermography.

Thermography is a technique based on measurements of body temperature. It is used in many areas - in industry, medicine, etc. Thermographic cameras have a wide range of applications. With their help, for example, respiratory diseases in cattle or rabies in raccoons are determined. Thermography is used to detect casting defects in metallurgical plants. It was developed during the Second World War to detect the enemy using night vision devices.

The University of Granada, and in particular the scientists Emilio Gomez Milan and Elvira Salazar Lopez, are pioneers in the application of thermography in the field of psychology. The results they have recently obtained are innovative in nature, and simply curious. For example, thermography can detect sexual arousal in men and women. Another curious fact is that performing complex tasks, participating in interrogation and lying cause a change in facial temperature.

The temperature around the nose and at the corners of the eyes is regulated by a brain element called the insula. And it is activated only when we experience real feelings (the so-called "qualias"). The more active, real emotions, the lower the temperature, and the lie raises the temperature.
