Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What was originally called the word weather?

The word "weather" originally characterized only good weather, and "bad weather" was its direct antonym. The single-root adjective "fine" is still used only in the meaning of "clear". Etymologically, the weather goes back to the common Slavic root "year", from which the words "suitable", "suitable" are also formed in Russian.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

World's tallest wind farm built 11.11.2017

In the town of Heidorf, several huge wind turbines have been erected that can provide electricity to 1000 homes.

Germany, more than any other country, promotes wind farms as the energy source of the future. This country ranks third in the world, after the United States and China, in the total generation of electricity using wind, and this bar is growing every year. Recently, German engineers decided to break the world record and built the tallest wind turbine on our planet.

The installation is located in the city of Heidorf and reaches an impressive height of 246,6 meters from the base to the tip of the turbine blade. The three other turbines that are also part of this setup are also incredibly tall, with the smallest being about 152 meters high.

For wind farms, height is the main parameter. The higher the turbine is located, the higher the wind speed and the more stable it blows, which leads to an increase in the received energy and to a smaller number of periodic power reductions. According to calculations, the capacity of four new turbines will be enough to provide electricity to 1000 homes.

And if it's not enough for you that these turbines are simply the highest on Earth, they have another interesting feature - a new energy storage technology. Rather, the technology itself is old, but the Germans have greatly ennobled it. Each of the windmills has a water tank built into the base, and when excess energy is generated, water is pumped from the tank to the storage. As soon as the power drops, the water flows back and rotates additional turbines, thereby increasing the generation of electricity. In this way, engineers solve one of the biggest problems associated with renewable energy sources - their irregularity and dependence of power on climatic features.
