Which fish is not cold-blooded?

Fish are cold-blooded animals, but some species can temporarily increase the temperature of certain organs, such as the eyes or fins. The only fish that is a complete endotherm is the redfin opah. Although its ability cannot be equated with the warm-bloodedness of mammals, because they maintain the same body temperature regardless of external conditions, and the opah can warm up only 5 degrees above the ambient water temperature.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is hard water?

Water is a combination of two gases, tasteless, odorless and colorless: it consists of hydrogen, a very light gas, and oxygen, a heavier and more active gas. Water exists in three states: as a liquid, as a solid (ice), and as a gas (water vapor). But when we discuss the various qualities of water, we find that the water that exists in nature is never completely pure. It contains mineral salts, gases and living organisms dissolved in it.

We very rarely deal with just "water". For example, chemically pure water is tasteless. But we all know that water always has some kind of aftertaste. In part, this taste gives the presence of certain impurities in the water. As raindrops pass through the atmosphere, they pick up some of the gases they pass through. The most important of these gases is oxygen, which allows living organisms to exist underwater. Carbon dioxide is another important gas in water. Its presence in water solution (carbonic acid) makes water capable of eroding limestone rocks and forming caves and depressions.

The action of carbonic acid in water dissolves lime and magnesium carbonates, making the water "hard". Hard water does not produce good lather. If you boil it, then limescale will remain inside the kettle. In addition to gases, natural water contains salts dissolved in it.

River and lake water also contain inorganic particles that simply float on the water. Water exists on Earth within a large energy circle. The sun moves water, evaporating it from the seas and oceans, into the air. In the air, water vapor collects into clouds and falls out as rain, fog, snow or dew, and returns back to the sea.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Desktop mobile phone 08.07.2005

The Czech electronic company "Yablotron" has launched the production of a desktop cell phone GDP-02.

It is intended for older people who want to use all the services provided by cellular communication, but do not need the portability of a telephone set. In addition, they hardly get their fingers on the tiny keys of an ordinary cell phone and have difficulty seeing the numbers and letters that appear on a miniature screen.

The GDP-02 has a large swivel screen, conventional number keys and a full set of alphabetic keys arranged in the same order as on a typewriter or computer keyboard. This makes it easy to send CMC messages. The phone has a memory for 200 numbers, it is powered by the mains, but it also has a backup battery.

The device can also be used where the telephone cable cannot reach, for example, in the country. In addition, it allows cellular operators to compete with wired communications: in Western Europe, many subscribers give up regular telephone numbers, but at home they would like to continue using the convenient desktop device.

Something similar, but with other purposes, began to be produced by the French company Epsi-Fon. This is a cellular set-top box with a jack for connecting a regular phone and with a directional antenna. The prefix is intended for residents of rural areas in developing countries where there is no conventional telephone network.

The nearest cellular telephony base station can be 32 kilometers away, the main thing is that there is a direct line of sight (this is possible in the mountains or when installing an antenna on a tower - one for the whole village). The set-top box is powered by a lead battery, which can be recharged from the mains, from solar panels or from a bicycle generator.
