How did the pins come about?

If we remember how many things are held together with pins, one can only marvel at how a person once managed to do without them. Pins of one form or another, from one material or another, have been used by man since ancient times.

The most ancient type of pin was, apparently, plant thorns. It is no coincidence that in some languages the word "pin" comes from the Latin word, which means "thorn" or "thorn". Then man began to make pins from the bones of animals or fish.

During the Neolithic, pins began to be made of bronze. It may seem surprising that the safety pin, the so-called English, or very similar to it, was probably in use in what is now Europe by the end of the Bronze Age, about 1000 BC. e. It was made of bronze, was very small and bent in such a way that its tip was fixed by the head. In ancient times, pins in Europe were used more for decoration than for fastening clothes.

In the form in which we know them, pins began to be produced around the end of the XNUMXth century. Then they were considered such a value that a set of pins was perceived as a wonderful New Year's gift. Sometimes, instead of pins, they gave an amount of money equal to their value. That's where the expression "pin money" came from in English.

The first pins of the modern type were made by the French, who imported them to England. Soon in England they began to make excellent pins. In 1775, the Continental Congress of the North American Colonies announced the establishment of a prize that would be awarded to the one who could make the first 300 pins, equal in quality to those brought from England!

What American state was named as a result of a cartographer's mistake?

When the Spaniards, led by Columbus, landed on one of the American islands, they named it San Juan in honor of John the Baptist. The town of Puerto Rico ("rich port") soon became the administrative center of the island. But later cartographers confused the names of the island and the city, so now the state is called Puerto Rico, and its capital is San Juan.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Focus on the nose 17.09.2009

As psychologists from the University of California (USA) have shown, when looking at a face, we mainly pay attention to its central part.

By showing participants the images of familiar and unfamiliar people on a computer screen, the researchers recorded eye movements. Most people looking at images of faces look first at the area of the face to the left of the nose, then at the tip of the nose, and then at the eyes.

In more than half of the cases, the first glance was enough to recognize a familiar face, the second glance increased the accuracy of recognition, and the third (by eye) did not solve anything. However, perhaps this behavior is typical mainly for Americans.

Similar experiments conducted by Scottish psychologists showed that the Japanese and Chinese pay special attention to the nose when recognizing faces, while the Europeans also look at the eyes and mouth.
